Schmeichel and Sporting Clube de Portugal edit

It would be nice if that section mentioned the controversy in which Schmeichel left SCP, on which he was released as a free agent after making inumerous public claims that he would be retiring and then on the beginning of the next season he joined yet another professional team as a GK. --Mecanismo | Talk 21:08, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have added some refs, which say his Sporting contract ran out after he considered, but ultimately chose not, to use a contract option of a possible further year at the club. And that he then wanted to consider a number of options, before chosing Villa. I have found no mention of him being released by Sporting, neither claims of retirement, but if you have sources, please share them/incorporate them into the text. I've added another nickname, The Battleaxe from Gladsaxe. Before anyone starts taking it off, this nickname was mentioned on a Man United video some time ago although I can't remember which one.81.149.178.248 08:56, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Goals scored edit

According to the wiki he scored a few goals for some of his clubs. Does anyone have any further info on this? Presumably they were all penalties as its pretty rare for a goalkeeper to be in the opposing half let alone have a shot on goal. I guess some could have been lucky kicks from inside his half. brob (talk) 23:41, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Schmeichel was one of the first goalies who frequently came up for corners when his team was trailing late on - if you watch United's equaliser in the 1999 UCL final, he's in the penalty area - and I vaguely remember that's how his Man Utd goal was scored, in an FA Cup tie. DrFishcake (talk) 11:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
He scored for United in the UEFA Cup against Rotor Volgograd - came forward for a corner late in the game and scored from the head. I think he scored a goal at every club in some competition except City. - 16keeper (talk) 05:20, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
The number of goals he has scored is inconsistent throughout the article. In the main body it asserts he's scored 11 goals, in the side-bar it references 10 goals in total. 86.0.194.106 (talk) 17:56, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's because one of the goals he scored, for Manchester United, was in the UEFA Cup, and therefore is not counted in the infobox. – PeeJay 18:55, 15 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why aren't the European games/goals included in any footballers infobox?
Because recording league appearances/goals is the only fair way of comparing footballers' careers, since numbers of cup appearances can vary quite staggeringly from club to club and from season to season. Also, with regard to early footballers, i.e. from before the Second World War, it was often only league stats that were recorded. – PeeJay 23:43, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
At Career Statistics it says that he has scored a goal for Man Utd, but at his Infobox it says he hasn't score goals for Man Utd. I have seen a video on YouTube scoring a goal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dardan Miftari (talkcontribs) 16:04, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Are you blind? Read above and you'll see why we only count league goals in the infobox. – PeeJay 20:17, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Polish ancestry? edit

What, Polish ancestry? But he has a German sounding surname. Does it mean that his father or grandparents were Germans living in former German territories east of Oder-Neisse line? Meursault2004 (talk) 16:06, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

You can't rule that out (at least on the basis of what's written in the article, maybe his autobiography states it more precisely), but his ancestors could have as well come to Poland a few hundred years ago and long since polonised. There are well enough Polish people with German names to make a claim like this impossible. And not to mention all the cases in between these two extremes where it's often indeterminable if someone is simply 'Polish' or 'German'. According to this source [1] the name Schmeichel today (well, 1992) is most common in the area of Toruń and Bydgoszcz, these two belonging to Poland before WW2 and the boarder being moved to the Oder and Neisse. If I'm allowed to put some hints I found together, it seems that indeed his father Antoni (Anton, Tolek) came from Chełmża and is a musician. Here [2], in a local bulletin he (well, most likely him - no reference to Peter) is thanked for donating some instruments to a music school in Chełmża. Gdabski (talk) 16:29, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the info. Well I also entered the query and found this: BB:6, By:9, Cz:1, Gd:6, Ka:5, Kn:8, To:33. I don't know all these abbreviations as I don't speak Polish. But I suspect Gd is Gdansk. These localities are located in the vicinity's of one another and used to be part of the German Empire. And of course you are right, if his ancestors came to Poland hundreds of years ago it is possible that they have long been Polonised. Cheers. Meursault2004 (talk) 09:42, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

His Father seems to have been polak of German descent. Schmeichel is obviously a German name. Peter doesn't really look polish/slavic either. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.17.140.107 (talk) 23:48, 19 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dirty Jobs? edit

What about his Dirty Jobs career? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.59.117.241 (talk) 20:30, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Style of play edit

The article would benefit from a section covering his playing style. I recall reading that his 'star jump' saving technique developed from playing handball growing up in Denmark. - 16keeper (talk) 05:37, 27 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

TV Presenter edit

It says on this page that Schmeichel is a pundit for Danish TV - I was just watching the Liverpool-Chelsea Champions league game there on Danish TV and Schmeichel was the main presenter! (so wierd, recognised the voice instantly) So clearly he's been promoted. Think the article may need updated. --Simonski (talk) 20:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

League Appearances edit

His info box says 643 career league appearances, however his career stats table only says 597... Which is it? Also, is the table complete interms of his overall apps?? Ck786 (talk) 04:09, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

The career stats table does not include his appearances for Gladsaxe-Hero. – PeeJay 21:45, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Goalkeeper stats table edit

Arsenal's new star goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has a career stats table that reflects his role as a goalkeeper, with lists of goals conceded and clean sheets. Peter Schmeichel, the best goalkeeper in history, has a career stats table which implies he had a middling career as a defender, since he hardly ever scored goals. Somebody must have done the research to get the proper table put in place, please can this be done? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Silas Maxfield (talkcontribs) 14:43, 20 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I disagree. Most football stats websites record stats for goalkeepers just as they would for any other player - i.e. only appearances and goals scored. It's fine as it is. – PeeJay 22:12, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Unless Peter Schmeichel has adopted British citizenship then if he has an MBE it would be an honorary one as he is not a citizen of a Commonwealth realm. Hence should be written as MBE(Hon).

STATS ARE WRONG edit

I KNOW FOR A FACT PETER SCORED FOR UNITED. BECAUSE I WATCHED THE GAME AND REMEMBER IT CLEARLY. PETER COMES UP FOR A CORNER AND PUTS IT IN THE NET. PUTS HIS HAND UP AND RUNS BACK. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.180.87.201 (talk) 16:57, 18 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The stats are not wrong. It is clearly stated that the infobox is for league stats only, therefore Schmeichel's goals tally for Man Utd is zero; full stats are included in a table lower down the article. Please read more closely next time. – PeeJay 00:27, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

PR Editing Watch edit

Schmeichel was know for loud criticism directed at the defensive backline. This was previously in the article, as of 2010, but since removed. It's been restored, with documentation. This is a well-written and documented article, but the at least one not so splendid detail was removed. It's now on my watchlist. Tapered (talk) 11:17, 23 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

personality edit

What was wrong with my section on his personality? - it had references for each point i made and they were from reputable sources. I went to great effort to add a section which i think enhances the quality of this page, and i don't care to have it all deleted without any explanation!

Height edit

I know Schmeichel's height is sourced as being 1.91m according to his Danish national team profile, but I'm certain that he is taller, as he always looked so large in goal, and he looked taller than Buffon (who is also listed as being 1.91m tall) when Gigi accepted his award from Schmeichel for the best FIFA goalkeeper this year. Some other sources, like soccerbase, soccerway, and ESPN, have conflicting heights (some say he is 1.93, some 1.96, his FIFA profile says he is 6'3"). Does anyone have a reputable and accurate source for his height? Thanks! Best regards, Messirulez (talk) 23:12, 3 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Goal for Man utd edit

He did score a goal for Manchester United, there is video of it SeccySnek (talk) 11:09, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

He didn't score a goal for Manchester United in the league though. Please note the asterisk and the note in the infobox that specifies stats are for the league only. Thanks. – PeeJay 13:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
