Cleanup

The article needs a fair bit of work. it doesn't read very well and there is quite a bit of additional information that could be added, including the two links below.Wikicanfixit 09:23, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the infobox. Reith was not just Minister for Defence. Wikipeterproject 07:34, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Telephone Affair

Why is the reference to the Telephone affair being removed after replacement? There is nothing libelous about it; it is documented; it is factual. The original sentence was simple, clear, neutral, and referenced. Later replacements were not quite so neutral, but their removal should have been discussed here.

I note that in all cases the edits were made by an unnamed editor. Is this one of the self-serving edits made Australian Government employees?

I am going to re-insert the original wording. HKL47 03:15, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

A Reverse DNS lookup shows the last edit came from drkw.com, which is appears to be a European investment bank. Peter Ballard 03:28, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
How very interesting. --HKL47 08:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)
Potentially more interesting than the one political edit from the PM's department, which were a total media beatup. Peter Ballard 09:05, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

His first crack at Federal Parliament was notable, but for for all the wrong reasons

He won the 4 December 1982 by-election caused by Lynch's resignation. Parliament was in session till 14 December (it actually rose early on the morning of 15 December - [1]), and the usual expectation was that he would make his way to Canberra to be sworn in at the earliest opportunity and start to represent his constituents. But he said he was too busy with other important matters to be bothered with that (or words to that effect) and preferred to wait till Parliament resumed in February. But then we had a double dissolution, and he lost his seat at the March 1983 election. One can only wonder what motivated the good people of Flinders to change their minds about him so quickly. Being treated with contempt might do for starters. Anyway, at that stage he had had the shortest career of any Federal MP ever.

He got his seat back in 1984 and we all know what happened after that. But this early history deserves some mention, imo. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 21:31, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

The HR Nicholls Society describes it euphemistically as "before having the chance to be sworn in".
Reith himself talks about it here, and makes the point that the only 2 other members who weren't sworn-in died before they had the chance. Reith didn't have that excuse. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 22:04, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
