Swamp lands

edit

There was all kinds of chicanery involved in the acquisitions of so-called swamp land from the state. My grandparents lived all their lives in Burns, I grew up in that country, and traveled a number of summers throughout Harney County with my grandfather, who was the County Surveyor and the Watermaster for that area. I heard many stories from the oldtimers about those events, but the one about Pete French damming areas, claiming them as swamp and then tearing down the dams is a new one to me. I'd like to see a citation for that. In Harney County, Oregon, and Its Range Land (Binfords and Mort, Portland, Oregon, 1951), George F. Brimlow quotes one of the early settlers of Harney County, Alphena Venator, on one incident: I well remember when Jake Ish and Henry Owens were filing claims on the Island Ranch and adjacent country. Later on when the settlers were contesting the swamp lands[,] in their proof Ish and H. Owens had sworn they rode from Camp Harney to the Venator Ranch in a boat. They did, but it was on a wagon. (p. 60f) That story I heard often.

Hee hee. That's a good story. Unfortunately this article was almost entirely written by an anonymous editor who didn't cite sources. The article was written in such a way that it seemed like a copyright violation, but running random samples of the text through google doesn't turn up anything. I'd love to see some sources for this info too. French was a colorful guy, I bet there's a good bio or two on him. Looks like an excuse for another trip to the library. P.S. Looking through the edit history, it appears this info was contributed by one W.L. Campbell...Katr67 03:32, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
