Talk:Permit (fish)

kukulamass edit

Please bear with me. I'm sure I'll mess this up. This is my first use of a talk page. My question concerns the last sentence in the taxonomy section; "In Sri Lanka, It is know by the name Kukulamass.[1]" The site referenced (Florida Museum of Natural History) does not mention this Sri Lankan name. This species is not native to Sri Lankan waters so I'm surprised they would have a vernacular name for it. I believe the reference should have been placed before that sentence rather than after it. But if that's the case what is the reference for the Sri Lankan name? I googled Kukulamass and found many hits but they all had the identical statement as in this article including the grammatical error of know instead of known so I can't tell which if any of them are the original source and suspect that they copied the statement from this article.

In a nutshell: 1 I would like to know the source of the Sri Lankan name and 2 The article would benefit from removal of the ambiguity.

Hi there, i've taken a look that the phrase you mentioned and found that it was added by an IP out of Milan quite a while ago. the line of text- which had been removed by user:cluebot once before- was totally uncited. the FMNH reference was for the line above it, and the person who added the part about the sri lankan name, inserted his/her text between the above line and the reference for it. Considering your arguments, along with that fact that this line has no source, i've removed it. I'll check some online sources and if i can confirm the sri lankan name with a source, ill add it again.

thanks for catching this Ryan shell (talk) 16:25, 8 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so ive done a little bit more digging and ive found nothing at the offical list of names on fishbase. i then searched the name Kukulamass itself and found an account on an Italian website of that name. Furthermore the word its self seems more similar to place names in new guinea. I think its safe to say that there was no factual basis in the line in question
