Advance Copy

I am not a member of wikipedia and I have a question about whether something meets wikipedia's standatds. I work for a newspaper and, if an advanced copy of a book is not used for a book review, the reviewer puts them out where anyone can take them. The Titans Curse was one of these books. Would it meet wikipedia's standards to publish spoilers about the plot? Also, The Sea of Monsters should be further explained (as with The Lightning Theif). Could someone please elaborate on this.

Putting down spoilers for an unrealeased book would probably be unnecessary, as it would ruin the plot for many. The earliest day I would adivise adding this would be May 5th, 2007. We are trying our best. Thank You. I hope this helps.

Race

Higher Standards

all of the articles relating to teh series seriously need higher standards; just reading a few lines of it, i noticed that it sounds more like a brief oral description than an encyclopedia entry. for example, this part of Nico's description in the article for Titan's Curse: "This is when Percy realizes that Hades is their father, but it isn't determined whether or not Nico knows this. Also he hates and wants Percy dead since he did not protect his sister as he promised." it would be better as something like "He now hates Percy because he did not protect Bianca like he had promised."

I find that many of the summary articles here are not very well written. This is a great series, and I think that the articles should be written with a bit more care. We get to meet Luke's mom.

We get to meet the goddess, Hestia.

The release date will be 5th May 2009.

The first draft of the book is done and Rick is working on the revisions.

Rick posted the book's title on the 4th September.

First kiss with Annabeth

It says in the article that in the Battle of the Labyrinth, "On page 203 Percy and Annabeth share their first kiss." However, in the Sea of Monsters (paperback edition), page 268, "Annabeth planted a kiss on my cheek".

• I would have deleted the text, but I don't know what to replace it with.
• Would that sea of monsters kiss count, as they aren't "sharing" the kiss?

Meh, I'm probably treating a wikipedia article as harry potter analysis material. But I thought it was worth pointing out.

The first , the third and the fourth books have borrowed heavily from Apollodorus's Library and also from Heliodorus; it has the same plot, and the same characters. The second book (Sea of Monsters) is based on the Odyssey. It seems that the author tried to follow the plots of his ancient models closely, and he does not hide his intention. Of course, J. K. Rowling also borrowed from Apollodorus, Heliodorus and Aeschilus (for instance, Libation Bearers). This explains the similarities between the two authors. BTW, Rick Riordan seems to know Greek, and to have read his models in Greek. In fact, he is a teacher of Greek mythology, and Apollodorus, Homer, and Heliodorus are likely to be his only models. I do not believe that he got his ideas from Ms Rowling's books. I would like to point out that Rick Riordan made a small mistake. There are two kinds of Cyclops, according to Apollodorus. Three Cyclops are the children of the Earth: Arges, Brontes, and Steropes. Earth's children are very good at working with metals. Bad book summaries

The summaries read like freakin' stuff off the back flap of a book. Wikipedia doesn't care about spoiling, and it's meant to be as un-biased (not a word, but I'm tired) as possible. 71.139.201.85 (talk) 16:40, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I was about to come here to say just the same. The summary of a plot is supposed to cover from the start to the end. It starts by laying out the basic situation in a sentence or two, saying who the main characters are, and then describing in a reasonably concise way what happens to them. It then gives the resolution. Even in a series with extensive hooks into the next volume, there's usually some temporary resolution at the end of a volume,and if not, one says so. the way to do it is to lay the book aside, and try to write as if telling someone a friend or relative who isn't likely to read the book, what the book is about so the next time you go on about how much you like it, he'll understand you. New Percy character page

I'm working on the new Percy page that had been created. I know that the previous page was up for deletion and ended up being redirected to the page about the books, however, the other character, major and some minor, have their own pages, so it seems silly that the protagonist has no character page of his own. How well the books are selling?

I would like to see information on how well the books are selling. I have seen elsewhere that only 1.2 million copies were sold. This is ten times less than Harry Potter. However, I believe that this number does not mirror the reality. The Last Olympian is 54th in Amazon best seller list. The LT is 339th. The PJ boxed set occupies the 90th place. well, i'm from israel and the hebrew edition have a similer cover, and well, i pretty sure the cover is the reason of the failure of the books in israel.

Fansite? Too long?

I strongly disagree. The Characters table definitely resembles a fansite. A lot of the information there is fancruft — excessive amount of intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience. The table is big but it doesn't really tell anyone unfamiliar with the subject anything about the characters. For example, it doesn't mention that Percy, Annabeth and Grover are friends, which would be a pretty important thing to tell readers in this article. The whole section should be rewritten as prose or a list. In terms of the plot summaries being too long, they definitely are. Wikipedia is not plot-only description of fictional works. Coverage of fiction articles on Wikipedia should include and primarily focus on real-world information, which includes coverage of things like the development, reception and a critical analysis of the subject (more examples). In this article there are only nine sentences of real-world information. Approximately 90% of the article is primary information and approximately 60% of the article is plot summary. This article is written is summary style and supposed to be a overview of the entire series. Each novel article already has a more detailed plot summary and there is no need to repeat the entire plot of each novel in this article. All that is required really is about two sentences, like what is in the lead of each novel article. The rest of each novel's subsection in this article should be real-world information. Support — Taking a look at the current archives, with 15 threads each, it seems that there is a thread, maybe two or three, per month. Capitalization

Why is the "The" capitalized in the article title? Articles aren't supposed to be capitalized in book titles unless they are the first word, or so I thought. You are correct that capitalizing articles is not normal. However, it is listed on the books as Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Companion Books Information?

I noticed that we didn't have any information for the companion books, such as The Demigod Files, or the upcoming The Ultimate Guide... Should we add a section for these? I mean, not in detail, maybe just a note, like:

I moved the "Characters" Section already. It was originally placed at the very end of the article. And about The Ultimate Guide, the only information I managed to get is from Rick Riordan's blog. Quoting information below:

Looking farther down the line, Disney-Hyperion will release the Ultimate Guide to Percy Jackson in February to coincide with the Lightning Thief movie. The Ultimate Guide is a compendium of information and full-color illustrations of Percy Jackson's world, including a bestiary of Greek monsters, and scrapbook of Percy's life, a guide to life at Camp Half-Blood, a tour of the Underworld by Nico di Angelo, a trip through the Labyrinth, and much more.

And finally, Disney-Hyperion will be releasing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Ultimate Guide, in February. I just got my first copy, hot off the presses, and it looks so cool! The cover has this fun holographic band of pictures that change as you move the book. Inside, there is a guide to the gods, camp, monsters, the labyrinth, and much more, all illustrated in full color. Beautiful stuff. My favorite pictures are probably the Manticore and Daedalus's Workshop.

There is already a Percy Jackson task force. A task force is pretty much a Wikiproject without all the administrative and bureaucratic work. Just a group of editors working together on a topic. Characters table and Camp Half-Blood section

I have removed the Characters table and the entire Camp Half-Blood section. These are the two major fansite-looking things. Sorry, I know some of you worked quite a bit on these sections, but I really think their removal will greatly improve the quality of this article.

First, the Characters table:

• All this First appearance, Undertakes quests and Cousins stuff is fancruft – intricate detail that may only interest a specific audience.
• ...And it doesn't really do what a Characters section is supposed to do – answer the question "Who is ....?" Take for example, Annabeth. Three extremely basic bits of information is not even mentioned once in this article. 12 year old, girl, friends with Percy. Annabeth could be the 50 year old antagonist of the story for all I know. Once in a while, take a step back and read the article as if you know nothing about the subject. Does it make sense and is there anything missing?
• The main reason for these problems, in my opinion, is because the character table... is a table. Table are bad for characters sections. You get restricted by the headers and it is not a good way to present Character information. The Characters section should be rewritten as either a list (like in the individual novels' articles), in prose form (a few paragraphs naming and describing the characters) or integrate character information into the plot summary (a brief description following the first mention of the character). Integrating it into the plot summary would be the best way to do it, but the other would be fine too.

The Camp Half-Blood section:

• All the reader needs to know is what was in the first sentence "Camp Half-Blood is a fictional camp for demigods in the series located off Long Island, New York."
• Everything else is unencyclopedic fancruft. This section should not be recreated, in any form.
• I wouldn't use the drawing. It is not an official image, hence it isn't really Camp Half-Blood but a fan's interpretation of it. It is original research.

In the end it is revealed that Luke, son of Hermes, stole the bolt for Kronos, who is attempting to come back to life. At the end Grover goes off to find Pan, the lost Greek God of nature.

American covers, etc?!

I've also noticed this about the logos and covers. According to http://www.hyperionbooksforchildren.com/contact.asp, the offices for "Hyperion Books for Children"-the publishing company for the series-are in New York, so it's a safe assumption that the series was originally published in America. Names of demigods

The section analyzing the meanings of the demigod's names seems contrived. If we were to keep this, we would need to make the connection between name meanings and their parents' powers. For example, it references bows and arrows several time for Apollo. However, to a reader who is not familiar with greek mythology would not understand the reference. Alternative The Lightning Thief summary

I have written an alternative summary for The Lightning Thief that, at just less than 300 words, is still longer than the suggested length but is shorter than the previous summary and spares many unimportant details.

Following a fight with Mrs. Dodds, his Pre-Algebra teacher who turns out to be a Fury, Percy discovers that he is a half-blood, a half-human half-god. He learns that his life is in danger as long as he is outside Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for half-bloods in which no monsters can enter its bounds. Sally, his mother, drives him and his friend Grover, a satyr, there, but as they approach the borders of the camp they are attacked by a Minotaur. In the ensuing battle, the Minotaur transports Sally to the Underworld and Percy temporarily destroys it. At Camp Half-Blood, he runs into one of his teachers, Mr. Brunner, who is a centaur named Chiron in disguise, and meets Annabeth. Chiron explains to him that Percy is accused of stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt for his father, Poseidon. Percy receives a quest from the Oracle to retrieve the bolt and journeys into the Underworld with Annabeth and Grover, believing Hades to be the thief. As they travel to the Underworld they face numerous mythological monsters, including Medusa, Echidna, and the Furies. When they confront him, Hades denies ever having taken the bolt and claims that his Helm of Darkness is missing as well. Percy finds out that Ares is in possession of the stolen items and wins them in a fight. He returns the helm to Hades, who returns Sally safely, and the bolt to Zeus. He learns afterwards that Luke is the real thief and has been working for Kronos, trying to give him a chance to rise again. Before he leaves the camp, Luke tries to kill Percy using a poisonous scorpion, which Percy kills after Luke leaves.

Religious specifics
