John Christie/ Timothy Evans

Is there any written evidence from Potter that links many of themes from Pennies From Heaven with that of the hanging of Timothy Evans in 1950? Evans was wrongly hanged for murdering his daughter and wife. Three years later John Christie was caught and he admitted to the murder of Evans' wife. When he went to the gallows, Christie, like Arthur in Pennies From Heaven, complains of an itchy nose, but is hanged regardless. Similarly Evans had a fractious relationship with his wife and Christie was a user of prostitutes. Both lived meagre lives in rented accomodation. The bit of Humphrey Carpenter's 1998 biography of Potter that deals with Pennies quotes Kenith Trodd about inspiration coming from a real murder of 1930s: "I came across a not very famous... Thirties murder in which a commercial traveller - with a prissy wife he didn't get on with... tried to incinerate a lookalike and assume his identity." Moonlight on the Highway

Potter uses miming to song briefly in this 1969 play (not Midnight... as I say in my edit summary) so its use in Pennies from Heaven is not an entirely new feature in his work. Adding "extended" to the opening summary seems to add the necessary clarity without an unduly lengthy explanation. Philip Cross (talk) 20:29, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Barman credit

Adding a reference (to a source which gives acting credits for the series), I'm taking out Will Stamp(e) as the barman, as he isn't mentioned. The only online sources I've been able to find that back this up seem to be sites that just mirror Wikipedia content. Since he doesn't appear on the BFI's 28-strong cast-list, and since, according to IMDb, he only appeared in one episode, hopefully this isn't a major loss. Legacy
