I think this page should be renamed Penmaen, Caerphilly rather than Penmain. Travelling through the village every day and checking numerous maps I can see no known use of Penmain. Alecs casnewydd (talk) 23:11, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
- Why would you want to change it? Anyone looking for Penmaen, Caerphilly is automatically redirected to the right page. This is an encyclopedia entry and the Anglicised spelling of 'Penmain' was the one most commonly used until relatively recently, as is explained in the article. It's part of the history of the place, you can't change that. Agreed that the Welsh spelling is now more common - also stated - but if you look around e.g. at the church and the Post Office, you'll still see the old spelling. Ralph Thomas, author of 'Oakdale, the Model Village', (which is the definitive history of the area) used to live in Penmain/Penmaen and he uses both spellings in his book. Most people will simply search for 'Penmaen', in which case they'll end up in the Gower, but there's a disambiguation link there too so they'll still end up in the right place. As they will if they enter Penmaen, Wales, Penmaen, Blackwood or Penmaen, Oakdale. So what's the problem?

- I am proposing to change the article name to Penmaen, Caerhilly and add a redirect from Penmain. As part of the OS and Welsh Assembly Place Name Standards Project, this place has been standardised as Penmaen. The local spelling or usage is secondary as place names are owned nationally but the exact spelling is controlled by the Local Authority under the Local Land Placename Gazeteer service. After extensive research they have concluded that the correct spelling is Penmaen and I think that the official name for the page should be Penmaen, Caerphilly. With regard for Penmaen in the Gower, this should be renamed Penmaen, Swansea with a disambiguation page for Penmaen. Alecs casnewydd (talk) 23:46, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
- How dare you carry out such a unilateral action!!!! This is not a gazeteer, but an article on a place that has been spelled Penmain for the best part of two centuries. - No local knowlege other than I lived there for 22 years. Regardless of how it HAS been spelt, Penmaen, Caerphilly is the correct Encyclopedia way of referencing it. People call Pontlllanfraith Pont, but we do not call it Pont on here. Neither do we show Tesco as Tescos just because it has been known by that. The title of an article should be it's truest form which is Penmaen, Caerphilly. I have given enough evidence of why it should be changed other than your "because i spell it like that" argument. - Pont? Tescos? That's one of the most childish arguments I've ever heard, and I don't intend to debate on that level. Neither do I propose to waste my time reverting your edits. But I have a word of advice for you. You will not make any friends on Wikipedia if you insist on charging around like some one-man representative of a Welsh language police force, showing contempt for your fellow editors, as you have done in this case. Why not try contributing to Wikipedia by actually writing an article? You may find it more rewarding,, and , incidentally, make a few friends along the way.
