85% brighter?
editIs that referring to the later models, after shadowmask CRTs had improved somewhat, or is it erroneously subtracting the "15%" brightness figure given for the early ones from 100%? (When really they'd be more like 567% brighter) 193.63.174.10 (talk) 18:25, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
- I'm looking for the 85%, but don't see it. But to answer directly, I don't have any exact number. All I know is that the penetron could be read in direct sunlight in an aircraft cockpit, while you'll likely find that difficult even on a modern LCD display (talking from experience here). Specific equipment using penetron CRTs
editIt might be worthwhile for the article to mention two specific commercial non-aviation uses of penetron CRTs:
- Digital Equipment Corporation VR20 X-Y (vector) display, two color (red and green?)
- HP 1338A X-Y (vector) display, red, green, and yellow
Outside of avionics, these are the only commercial products I've found which use penetron CRTs. The DEC VR20 and HP 1338A were fairly obscure, and I don't think too many of either were sold.
HP also had some patents relating to the penetron tube and drive circuitry in the 1338A, which could be added to the patent list in the article:
- US 4,346,308 DC switching circuit with current through resistive load below holding current of triac strings to charge capacitive load to predetermined ptentials
- US 4,394,682 DC switching circuit
- US 4,450,387 CRT with internal termionic valve for high voltage control
- US 4,585,976 Beam penetration CRT with internal automatic constant deflection factor and pattern correction
