Judith Binney
editIn "Papahurihia, Pukerenga, Te Atua Wera and Te Nakahi: How Many Prophets?", Judith Binney claims there were two Papahurihia's. The first was the founder of the Nakahi movement, and the other was the elderly seer. Would be interesting to add to the article.
Another good source is "The Invention of Papahurihia" by Judith Ward, which argues that the whole idea of Papahurihia leading a syncretic snake cult is based on a secular misreading of the Missionary's writings. Her thesis is that Papahurihia's "cult" was really just a continuation of local customs, with a later, thin veneer of Catholicism, and that many of the supposed Judeo-Christian elements have no serious evidence.
