Disputed

There is (or was from 1971 to at least the 1990s) a thing called the United Nations Peace Medal. It seems to have been awarded by the UN Secretary General to people based on some combination of being diplomatically important enough to get a gong and/or having done something to promote peace. It was also available to buy as a collectible exonumia. I don't know whether the medal presented to Marley was:

• a diplomatic United Nations Peace Medal given on behalf of the UN
• a collectible United Nations Peace Medal purchased from the UN by Marley's African fans and then given to him.
• a one-off medal created by Marley's African fans, who called it the "Peace Medal of the Third World".

Sources differ on both the name of and the reason for the award:

The phrase "Third World" is now deprecated but maybe in 1978 it was not. Senegalese Youth Ambassador to the UN does not sound like the kind of high ranking official to present a prestigious prize. • • It has also been claimed that Third World (band) was awarded it in 1986, but I haven't been able to find a reliable source for that - even the band doesn't appear to claim that. In general, I'm wondering if this was a misconception that is now widely believed, or if it was a minor award that was only notable in its awarding to Bob Marley - I'm hesitant to nominate this for AfD at the moment, but it might need to be at some point, or at least repurposed to better explain that it isn't affiliated with the UN.
