Talk:Payne (surname)

Origin edit

There is no source given for the claim that:-
"Payne is a British surname of French origin (Payen; Payens). It originates in the Payns region in France."

Although no less sourced than the first statement, a citation needed tag has been added to:-
"many have attempted to draw a loose connection with the Latin "pagan". There is no hard evidence to support this theory.

However, Wiktionary, which also does not quote sources, states that Payne is:-
"An English surname, variant of Paine."[[1]]

It then states Paine is:-
"An English surname, of Norman derivation, meaning someone who lived outside of a city (See Latin pagus)."[[2]]

Can anyone provide an actual source for any of these theories?
