Birth

The Baseball Encyclopedia lists him as being born in Washington, D.C. Which is right? Badbilltucker 20:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

All of the published references through about 2000 (inc. Total Baseball and several biographical compilations) list the place of birth as D.C., but the 2005 ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia and Baseball-Reference.com both state Virginia. Perhaps there's been some new research in the last five years leading to a revision; Retrosheet [1] also says Virginia, though they give the year as 1855 (suggesting he would have been 17 when he debuted in the NA) and also note his middle name as being Aloysius. I'm inclined to stick with the year being 1852 in the absence of better info and more than one source, but since all the most recent sources seem to agree on Virginia, that appears to be most likely. • middle name Aloysius, birth year 1855, cemetery Mount Olivet Washington DC --that much is newly published in SABR Biographical Research Commmittee January/February 2006 Report. I might term that SABR Biographical Research Commmittee Report, February 2006; it is very bimonthly.

I presume that whoever did the research for SABR is not just basing the year of birth on the cemetery record, which might easily be incorrect. As for noting in the text the research leading to the change, that's thoroughly reasonable. MisfitToys 18:35, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Also - I'm guessing that he was born in rural Virginia (at least, not in a specific city or town, since none has been noted); ideally, the place of birth should include the county, if the specific place is known. MisfitToys 18:53, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Definitely only the cemetery record. Birth and death date revisions are rarely featured in the bimonthly report, merely listed. That is disappointing here, given Hines' fame and the significance of the three-year revision, making him a 17-year old major leaguer rather than the oldest player in the game 20 years later. --P64 20:53, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I'd be inclined to shift the birth year back to 1852, if that's all they're going on. My own grandfather's gravestone is a few years off regarding his birth; quite often, the people doing the burying and gravestone ordering were simply guessing at the year. MisfitToys 23:54, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I added one citation as a Reference without looking for a standard or common citation format for ballplayers or people, just to get the citation data in there. And there is no specific reference in the body of the article yet. --P64 04:03, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

What's there now seems OK; I don't think we need to worry about footnotes until the article is a bit longer. I added the middle name, and also moved the references section beneath the external links, which is standard. Some contributors prefer that external links used as sources be listed as references or included as footnotes, though that's largely a matter of personal preference.
