Confusion

Over at the Canongate Kirkyard article Marchmont is described thus:

• Patrick Hume, 1st Earl of Marchmont (1641–1724) was another Jacobite, a staunch Catholic, and Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1696 to 1702. During the Jacobite Rising of 1715 he hid from government troops in the vaults of Polwarth Parish Church, where he was fed by his daughter. The tomb in Canongate no longer has a stone monument, as it now forms an eastern entrance to the northern section of the churchyard. The tomb purely carries the name "Marchmont", an inscription placed many years after the original interment, probably at the time of breaking through to the north, and replacing an original monument. Catholicism was still illegal, and, as a resident of the area, Marchmont was entitled to burial within the parish, despite its Protestant affiliations.
