Such a well-known song...?! edit

Not often that I'm this astonished about the length of a stub... Ulphix (talk) 23:57, 27 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

The gospel music of MC Hammer's gospel plus rap is by Douglas Miller..., musically totally different to the hymn, deserves more "distinction" ... edit

I started off being amazed that hardly anyone seems to realize that MC Hammer's gospel rap "version" is actual composed by Douglas Miller, something I only found in a youtube comment after a relentless long search, because I couldn't believe it was by "Hammer", even though he has become a pastor. Turns out even the staccato beginning is by Miller, not Burrell. I'm still surprised that not only that wasn't mentioned, but also that it says "version" here and I grudgingly used the similar phrase "up-tempo arrangement". Musically, Miller's is not a "version" or an arrangement, because there is not the least remnant of Doane's melody. It's a completely different melody using the 1st verse twice, the chorus twice and then a long ad lib "Do Not / Do Not, Pass Me By / Pass Me By", then again the chorus, then again the ad lib. Hammer copies all of Miller's melody and band phrases, starting with the 1st verse and the chorus once, and then repeating usually only the 2nd half of the chorus interspered with rap, ad libs, and instrumental / beat sections. Which bible verses are most relevant - really Luke 18:38? edit

"Based on Luke 18:38" seems a reduction, it doesn't fit too well, and other bible verses Gen 18,3 and Ps 61,1-2 might be considered just as well, altho admittedly they are OT rather than NT. Ulphix (talk) 00:01, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Doubtful that William H. Doane's melody was already called "Pass Me Not" edit

I can't imagine it being correct that William H. Doane's melody would already have had the name "Pass Me Not", but I can't find anything refuting it, as it usually seems to be referred to just as 'a melody' - which is much more likely, so unless / until someone can prove that, I'd prefer that name to be deleted. Saviour or Savior? edit

AE didn't still(?) use Saviour in 1868, did it? (Or did she?) In the quote on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanny_Crosby Savior is used: "She also once said, "when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior" - if that is correct. If Savior, then 9x Savior would have to be corrected in this article, as well as the link from the Crosby article, whilst the ogg of the song is savior and the first repetition of the title already uses savior...
