Desert or mountains/hills? edit

Is this a real desert (sources) or just hills: are the Anna Creek Painted Hills a part of the Painted Desert? Any information about the size/area (300 sqm)? RIMOLA (talk) 23:08, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

when you look at different photos you can notice that the vegetation is more or less sparse with either little ground cover at some places or important ground cover at other places. According to isohyet maps the area receives probably 180 mm or a little less : the two closest climate stations are Oodnadatta Airport, 27.56°S 135.45°E, which receives 176.9 mm (period "1939 - June 25, 2013") (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_017043.shtml) and seems to be on the same isohyet line as the Painted Desert, and Coober Pedy 29.00°S 134.76°E which receives 156.9 mm (period "1921 - June 25, 2013") (both mean annual rainfall data from Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology). Therefore it can be stated that the Painted Desert (South Australia) is a semi-desert (but not a true desert as certain areas of the Sahara or the Rub' al Khali, for instance, where ground cover is very little and sometimes even nil). This Painted Desert is located around 27°54'27" S 134°49'55" E while, apparently, the Anna Creek Painted Hills are located about 20 km south of Anna Creek, so the Anna Creek Painted Hills coordinates are about 29°09'08" S 136°19'50" E which, if this is exact (I have estimated these coordinates from different maps locating the Anna Creek Painted Hills but I have no official source so these coordinates aren't sure) it would mean that the Anna Creek Painted Hills are about a little less than 200 km southeast of the Painted Desert (South Australia). In http://www.ritas-outback-guide.com/PaintedDesert.html you can find the following information : "850km² of the Painted Desert area was declared "The Arckaringa Hills state heritage area" in 1985" so the semi-desert area is possibly superior to 850km² (≈ 30 km * 30 km) which is equal to 328,1868348 sqm, that is close to your size.
