Pablo Tac, a Luiseño Indian was born in Mission San Luis Rey in 1822. He always wanted to be a missionary and thought that the priests were going to help him while other Indians thought they were torturing them. The priests thought Pablo was a good student and at the age of ten he went to Rome to receive special schooling. While in Rome, Tac wrote a diary saying how the lives of the Indians changed when the missionaries came to California. Sadly, Tac died of smallpox in 1841, before he reached the age of 20.
