Attendance Figures in General

Most professional conventions, such as San Diego Comic-Con, PAX, etc. report attendance using a turnstile count. That means a person who buys a weekend badge is counted three times. It is inaccurate to say that there were 70,000 attendees at PAX 2011. In reality there were somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000. Conventions that are four or five days are even worse since they multiply by the number of days for a weekend pass. I'm also not sure if they count exhibitors, attendees, guests, security guards, janitors, etc.

By comparison we can look at many non-profit fan conventions such as Otakon which only counts actual attendees. They only sell one kind of pass, a full convention pass. They only count unique memberships, not anything else. They reported their attendance as 29,274 in 2010. if they had counted using the same method as PAX or San-Diego, their attendance would be 90,000+

The point is that the counting methods behind these attendance figures need some context so they can be properly understood. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.58.0.2 (talk) 20:22, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

13k figure may be outdated

If you notice, Mike speculated (before PAX 2006) that PAX 2007 might attract 13,000 visitors. At that point, PAX 2005 had had 9,000 visitors, so it was a reasonable assumption. It would have gone on the basis that PAX 2006 would have had something like 11,000 visitors.

However, fate intervened; PAX 2006 attracted 20,000 visitors. As such, there is no reason to doubt that PAX 2007 will attract somewhat more than 20,000 visitors, possibly somewhere on the order of 30,000. Perhaps a note should be made in the article that the turnout of 2006 would seem to indicate that PAX 2007 will be much larger than originally thought. 69.93.96.202 17:25, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

The estimates for 2007 may be numbers for people who attend, whereas the 2006 numbers may have been attendance-days meaning a 3-day pass counts as 3 people. This makes more sense as I don't think the Meydenbauer Center was capable of housing the amount of people who were said to have attended in 2006. Xnolanx 19:28, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

The article description needs modifying, possibly adapting from the main site. Druss666uk 16:55, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

PAX 2008 East

Should be include information about the PAX 2008 located on the east coast? They have made public comment stating that there will be a separate, but very similar event on the east coast. So what do people think? MrMacMan 00:33, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

East Coast PAX is something that is still under discussion but has not been announced. So far as I understand, it is not in the works for 2008. If any mention is made of it, it should be left that it has been brought up and is under consideration. (Please remember, the comment regarding an east coast PAX is about two years old now.) Petfish 11:40, 31 October 2007 (PST)

East Coast PAX is being held first in 2010, and at PAX 2008, Jerry and Mike announced that it will be held in Boston, at a different time of year than the West Coast version, as well as the fact that the two Expos together will be called the 'PAXis of Evil'. 09:31, 2 September 2008 (EST)

Omegathon 2006

Wich games were played in that Omegathon? The article lacks this info.Vicco Lizcano 22:09, 4 May 2007 (UTC) (Hey! Listen!)

Picture caption

The picture of the crowded Meydenbauer lobby needs a better caption. Something like

PAX attendees crowding the lobby of Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center, 2006

...particularly since PAX isn't at the Meydenbauer anymore. I'd add it, but.... I don't know that that's from 2006. (It's either 04, 05, or 06.) Anyone know for sure what year that pic is from? - Keith D. Tyler 19:21, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Not Completely True

"No such show existed, so PAX was born." This quote ignores the existence of MAGFest, another festival that celebrates video/PC/tabletop gaming. MAGFest started in 2002, two years before PAX. I guess it could be argued that MAGFest is more of a celebration than a show, though... --71.161.57.226 20:41, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

MAGFest is on the East Coast. No such show existed on the West Coast. Additionally, even at its highest attendence level, MAGFest has attracted only half of the audience of the first PAX and less than 2% of PAX 2009. They've never attracted big name showcases or attendees. Before PAX, the closest thing was E3 which was video game-centered and closed to the public. There's no reason to remove the line because prior to PAX, no show existed that brought the gaming industry and its fans together with a complete focus on video, PC, and table top games. - 67.187.245.98 (talk) 16:30, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Merge Proposal

Someone should probably consolidate the Penny Arcade Expo 2007 article into the PAX 2007 section of this one. -- 24.247.221.200 (talk) 19:19, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree. Drego5 (talk) 18:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Agreed, there's no need for a separate article. Terraxos (talk) 00:14, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
This seems like the best course of action. The details which change per year are small enough to not bloat the main article anytime soon. Xnolanx (talk) 21:43, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:PAX qjpreviewth.jpg

Image:PAX qjpreviewth.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

PAX 2010 expansion

I've seen that notice at the bottom of the PAX 2010 section for almost 3 months now. Someone either needs to input some damn information already or delete it. 98.92.249.18 (talk) 20:48, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

PAX Canada?

Penny Arcade Expo has recently expanded to the U.S. East Coast in Boston as PAX East. Do you think, with time, that they'll expand over the border to Canada? If yes, in which year timeframe? Which city would they most likely pick, for what reasons, and which venue? --Henrickson User talk | Contribs 00:44, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Necrowombicon

I, and many others, consider Necrowombicon to be the nucleus of PAX. Does it warrant a mention or section in this page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sleet01 (talkcontribs) 08:31, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

General Prose approach

Instead of a "year-by-year" approach to this article, there should be a general prose written for the whole convention. Basically answer questions like "what goes on", "what is this convention about", "convention history", and so on. I've never attended, so I won't even be able to start. But this is an idea.
