This article needs a picture - there's promo material at the official site, but I don't know how one goes about getting that cleared under the GFDL. Other TV shows have what looks like proprietary images - Lost has a promo poster. The official sitehas wallpaper it invites you to download - does that mean free use? A cut-down version of this onewould be nice. --Tirana 04:22, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that qualifies as a promotional poster, so I've added it to the article. We're supposed to use low quality images, but their web site doesn't offer a smaller version, so I've uploaded it as is and explained my justification.-gadfium 04:58, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Music

edit

Where were The Black Seeds used? They certainly haven't been in Series 2 at all. PhilZombie 04:53, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Loretta's birthday party - I forget which song, maybe "Fire". --Tirana 02:23, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, that's not correct. All the music from the party was heavy rock, mostly by Joel Haines the show's composer. PhilZombie 06:32, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. I know I heard it somewhere though. A party scene with Van, and you can hear it through the walls. Maybe I'm getting the two seasons muddled. --Tirana 04:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hah, "Sometimes Enough" was used on Season 3, Episode 1, as Munter wanders round with the sandwich board. So the above issue is academic. --23:39, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Season 2 summary

edit

This section could do with some improvement, but most of all it needs a clear reference point (timewise). Saying Aurora is 'now' with the gangs is implying time is as it was up to Episode 6. It would probably be best to use end of season as the reference point, so all information should be past tense ie. Aurora was with the Horseman until Van rescued her. PhilZombie 04:55, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have begun to update season Two, adding storyline details like Wolf going on the run and Loretta sleeping with Hayden and Pascalle's relationship with Bruce etc etc. But it is late so it is far from complete. I'll rewrite everything into the proper tense tomorrow. Dippit 13:23, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Since these season summaries contain major spoilers, and the program is now being sold overseas (I think an Australian TV station is currently showing series 1), do we want to move the summaries to Outrageous Fortune, Season 1 and Outrageous Fortune, Season 2? That would allow people to look up the cast list and basic details without seeing plot details.-gadfium 19:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps some more visible spoiler warnings? I agree that season 2 has some plot twists that should be kept out of the way of casual readers. Not sure if each warrants its own page yet, though. What does Lost do?--Tirana 20:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Lost has a one paragaraph summary of each season on its main page and seperate articles detailing the seasons in more depth (not to mention summaries for every episode). Perhaps what we have now is enough but when they page starts getting too big (more than 30kb) then we can have seperate pages for each season. Dippit 13:54, 30 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I see the official website has changed its episodes section, so that it's all one big season (up to The Job), and there are no spoilers for the Australian audience. --Tirana 02:24, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Season 4

edit

The comment that the fourth season has completed filming in March 2008 is not correct (and may be based on misinterpretation of an interview with Robyn Malcom where she states filming of the fourth episode - not fourth season - has been completed). Filming is still ongoing, and casting calls for extras continue as of end March 2008.

Penguincentral (talk) 09:12, 24 April 2008 (UTC)I'm guessing Series 4 will premiere come June/July 08. Can't remember the source though :/Penguincentral (talk) 09:12, 24 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Season 5

edit

Just checked the TV3 website and no sign of season 5 beginning on march 14th?

The statement was added quite some time ago and is presumably only an estimate. Since it is unsourced and incorrect, I've removed it.-gadfium 19:00, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Requested move

edit

I suggest that we move this article to Outrageous Fortune and move the article on the movie currently at that title to Outrageous Fortune (movie)Outrageous Fortune (film). I believe the television series is the more important subject. It has won multiple awards, and a fifth season is currently in production. It has aired in several countries, has been remade in the Uk and is being remade in the US. It will naturally have a hatnote for the movie if moved to this title. I will take care of changing all links if the move is accepted.-gadfium 04:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose... No evidence is given that this local TV series (well, one season crossed the Tasman to Australia) is the primary meaning of the phrase, and frankly I find the claim a little bizarre. At least the film had international release and internationally known stars, while I did a quick check on the first two names in the cast list of the TV series and they seem to also be of local New Zealand fame at best. Sorry if that's a disparaging and I wish them well! But I'd weakly support moving the film to a disambiguated title and creating a DAB page at Outrageous Fortune, because the Shakespeare quote is the primary meaning IMO and sufficiently well known that we'll probably get more articles to add to the DAB list in time. • The evidence of notability is given in the article: perhaps I should spell it out. The show has aired in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The same show (identical plotline but new actors) was made as Britain as "Honest", and a version is being produced in the United States. There are more than 65 hour-long episodes so far (including a two hour movie). Overall, it is a much more substantial work than the 1987 movie. The awards for the New Zealand television series are New Zealand based but the award for the 1987 movie is American-based, and was for an actor, not for the movie.-gadfium 19:35, 1 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Not noteworthy comment I think this PRIMARYTOPIC moving articles is absolutly POV. In 3 years there is a videogame and nobody will know about the tv series. Why not simply a disamb page on "Outrageous Fortune" and all other at their (film) (games) (tv series) (born ) (, New York) places? Greetings. (Please excuse I'm not rude, but I'm not a native speaker.) Sebastian scha. (talk) 02:27, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oppose Outrageous Fortune (TV series) --> Outrageous Fortune

...but Support Outrageous Fortune --> Outrageous Fortune (film)

...and create new Outrageous Fortune disambiguation page Ex nihil (talk) 03:17, 3 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I note that somebody has now gone and done this and I believe everything is in the right place. Of course Outrageous Fortune should have belonged to Shakespeare in the first place. The way the move has been done 'though has left a lot of links to a disambig page that need to be redirected. Ex nihil (talk) 23:51, 5 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge

edit

I propose that Characters in Outrageous Fortune be merged into Outrageous Fortune (TV series)#Cast and Characters. The series itself is notable but notability is not interited by the characters just because the series is notable. Brief character descriptions can be included in the main article but there is no need for a separate article unless the characters are verified as being notable outside the fictional universe. Wikipedia articles should describe fiction and fictional elements from the perspective of the real world, not from the perspective of the fiction itself. When an article about an aspect of a work of fiction is created, the subject's real-world notability must be established according to the general notability guideline by including independent reliable secondary sources. Characters in Outrageous Fortune fails to do this. McWomble (talk) 11:31, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Support good idea. Ex nihil (talk) 11:43, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oppose merger. The Characters article has just been created, and is in the process of being expanded and sourced.-gadfium 19:34, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
www.outrageousfortune.co.nz is not a reliable source. You must cite independent reliable secondary sources to establish real-world notability and support any claim. McWomble (talk) 10:57, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

General editing

edit

The character summaries have way too much emphasis on the last two seasons. I will fix this up, get rid of the present tense and so forth. --Helenalex (talk) 21:26, 1 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

There needs to be some discussion about whether to keep the table format or go with a much shorter list (rather than just replacing the tables without discussion). I agree that a lot of what's on this page is too long, but I also think the proposed edits shorten it too much. The ideal solution IMO would be to have a seperate characters page, but since this has already been tried and deleted it's probably a non-starter. Next best idea -
1. Shorten the season synopses way down, and generally improve the writing.
2. Shorten the main character bios a bit to focus on how they fit into the family, basic personality stuff, and maybe what their plotlines broadly involve.
3. Do something similar with characters such as Nicky and Sheree who are major characters for one or two seasons.
4. Reduce bios of other recurring characters to one or two fairly brief sentences. --Helenalex (talk) 04:47, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
As an example of 2, Cheryl's bio might read -
Cheryl is the mother of Van, Jethro, Pascalle and Loretta. She is a loving mother but extremely stubborn and strong-willed. When the show begins her husband Wolf is sentenced to four years in prison, and she reacts by deciding that the entire family will 'go straight'. Many of her plotlines throughout the show revolve around her attempts to impose this plan on the rest of the family. Cheryl's other main storyline is her romantic relationship with Wayne Judd, who begins as the family's enemy and becomes Cheryl's partner. --Helenalex (talk) 04:53, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Also, I support the list as opposed to table format, as it is a much more efficient use of space. So, "Cheryl (Robyn Malcolm, seasons 1-6) is the mother..." --Helenalex (talk) 04:55, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

List of characters in Outrageous Fortune (earlier called Characters in Outrageous Fortune) was merged back into the article in 2008, but there was no deletion discussion for this as far as I am aware. The standard naming for such an article would appear to be List of Outrageous Fortune characters; see List of Shortland Street characters as an example.-gadfium 05:53, 10 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Longest running?

edit

From the lede: ...making it the longest running drama series made in New Zealand.

Excluding soaps, presumably, otherwise both Close to Home and Shortland Street would be well ahead of it. That probably needs mentioning in the text... Grutness...wha? 15:12, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
