Question edit

Do we really need this article when we've got Maharashtra? How many more such "outline" articles are available for other states? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:22, 20 April 2013 (UTC).Reply

Outlines, which present structured information, provide the following benefits:
  • They help the user see the overall structure and layout of the information related to a subject
  • The bird's eye view provided by outlines allows users to see patterns in the information in a relatively painless way
  • By the way they are organized, outlines help users find individual pages that match some criteria
  • Outlines reveal gaps in the information that need to be filled in
There exists Outline article for India and for states such as Outline of Karnataka,Outline of Tamil Nadu,Outline of Kerala and then there is Outline of Maharashtra. And Outlines of all states of India are requested in Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Requested articles KAS(talk) 09:44, 17 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
As of September 2016, there are outlines for every state of the United States, every state of India, and all but one province of Canada. The Transhumanist 02:37, 6 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines edit

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia. The hierarchy is maintained through the use of heading levels and indented bullets. See Wikipedia:Outlines for a more in-depth explanation. The Transhumanist 23:57, 8 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
