Expy of Ulsio from Barsoom?

edit

This monster seems to be just a renamed version of the Martian rat, called an ulsio, from the John Carter/Barsoom novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. The description of an ulsio is thus (from the Barsoom wiki): "The eyes are small and close together, nearly hidden within fleshy sockets. Its jaws are pure bone, extending beyond the flesh of its face to give the appearance of a rotting face, with five sharp and spade-like teeth in each jaw. It has a six legs with broad, blunt-taloned feet, which it uses to push dirt behind it when digging." This fits the Russ Nicholson illustration and the Fiend Folio description almost exactly.

It's generally mentioned when a D&D creature is a renamed version of another thing from literature (e.g. halflings/hobbits, treants/ents). Should it be noted here as well? 50.204.232.30 (talk) 23:10, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

If you can find a reliable source to confirm your suspicions, that it's not more than just a coincidence. 73.168.15.161 (talk) 04:25, 14 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
