Oronsay, Inner HebridesOronsay, Argyll and Bute – Of the other islands titled "Oronsay" (see List of islands called Oronsay#Inner Hebrides) all but one (Oronsay, Outer Hebrides) is also in the Inner Hebrides thus this title is a WP:PDAB and fails WP:PRECISION. Further disambiguation is probably uncontroversial but I bring this here because of this post at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 January 20#Category:Small Isles, Inner Hebrides User:Deskford indicating that User:Crouch, Swale/Small Isles, Argyll and Bute should instead be disambiguated with "Jura" instead of "Argyll and Bute" and thus Oronsay, Colonsay might be preferred here (if we do decide to use "Colonsay" to disambiguate here then I'll move the Small Isles page, although this example looks less strong since the size difference between Jura and the Small Isles is much greater than that of Oronsay and Colonsay). However the Small Isles are near Jura, not on Jura, similarly Oronsay is near Colonsay, it isn't part of it (even though it might sometimes be thought of to be). However such disambiguation might be appropriate when there are multiple in a council area but only for Highland does WP:UKPLACE not recommend the council area first so Argyll and Bute is the correct disambiguator here. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:38, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose. Per WP:UKPLACE we do not use "Argyll and Bute" as a disambiguator; we may use "Argyll" or "Bute" as necessary, but in this case Oronsay, Argyll would seem as imprecise as Oronsay, Inner Hebrides, as there are probably dozens of variously-spelt examples that could fit that description. Oronsay ("tidal island") is a very common name, and in this case the best disambiguator would probably be "Colonsay", the name of the island to which it is tidally connected, so I would support a move to Oronsay, Colonsay. As with all these disambiguation cases, the aim is to produce something as close as possible to what people would use naturally in the real world, and this seems to fit the bill here. Minor islands are often regarded as part of the major island that they lie off, so Oronsay, Colonsay, as with Small Isles, Jura, would seem the most natural disambiguation. --Deskford (talk) 23:46, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Deskford, sorry I missed the part that "Settlements in Argyll and Bute. Mainland Argyll settlements should be styled [[placename, Argyll]]. For example, Tarbet, Argyll". I now see you're point about "Argyll" being within the spirit of the NC. The point being that Argyll and Bute places that aren't on the mainland would be disambiguated by island (or by Scotland like Jura, Scotland if they are themselves an island) but this is a case where "Scotland" (and Inner Hebrides) is insufficient and its an island its self. In Category:Islands of Argyll and Bute they seem to use either "Scotland" "Inner Hebrides", or the loch/island group they are in. The only exceptions I can see is Sheep Island, Argyll and Bernera, Lismore (though I argued that that should be at Bernera Island). As pointed out, while Oronsay, Colonsay is recognizable it isn't ideal since we usually use commas to indicate that something is in/on not near something, however thus does match "Bernera, Lismore", which should maybe be at Bernera (near Lismore) thus Oronsay (near Colonsay) however I'd still be happy with Oronsay, Colonsay (even though its a little tautological, repeating the "-say"). So I'd be happy to change my recommendation to either Oronsay, Argyll or Oronsay, Colonsay, whichever is deemed the best by others.
There don't appear to be any other Oronsays in Argyll though so "Argyll" would be sufficient. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:19, 6 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
