Lead Photo Awkward and Needs Work

Okay, first time here, I've been at Joseph Smith Jr. for a bit. So on the topic, the head graphic shows one of Joseph's nephew's families. Granted it identifies him as Joseph F. Smith, yet new visitors are likely not certain this is not Joseph Smith Jr. So if the photo is to stand, I recommend simply adding a paranthetical stating Joseph F. Smith's relation to Joseph Smith Jr. as his nephew. I have made the change, please let me know if there are problems. 207.216.63.118 (talk) 05:08, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Canadiandy —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.216.63.118 (talk) 05:05, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Original research

This article relies on numerous direct quotations from primary sources to present a point of view, which is OR - Original Research, and prohibited by Wikipedia. Editors are supposed to cite reliable, third-party sources, preferably academic historians and scholars, in this case. The extensive primary source quotations should not be used. Awkward Organization and Repetitive Quotes

This article, while consisting of decent information, needs reorganizing and cleaning. I cleaned up a few minor things (a subhead titled "New Doctrine" contained only a "see names of wives" link), but there are duplicate quotes and some organizational issues that should be improved (Why is Joseph F. Smith's quote in the section about specific sect beliefs, rather than earlier in the article talking about the veracity of revelations, for example? Any why does the section of Smith's Wives exist at the very end of the article, when it should be incorporated into the 1840's section which introduces the subject?). I know this article has been edited often and extensively, but without changing a lot of the content here, it could be made simpler and clearer. Unless there are dramatic objections to this, I may do some of this clean-up in a few days.

"RLDS - Joseph Smith III" section

Right now the "RLDS - Joseph Smith III" section contains a quote from LDS president Joseph F. Smith. I think that just confuses the issue. If Joseph F. Smith's position needs to be covered and quoted then it shouldn't be under the RLDS section unless we want to change the title of it to "Polygamy in the Latter Day Saint succession crisis controversy" or something. But if we're going to start adding quotes, there are tons of anti-polygamy articles in the RLDS True Latter Day Saints Herald that could be quoted as well. --BenMcLean (talk) 17:20, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

You're absolutely right, Ben. I've thought the same thing myself. Can you edit it? Best, A Sniper (talk) 17:29, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Title change

Support renaming this article "Latter Day Saints Polygamy" or "Polygamy in the Church of Latter Day Saints" Lfstevens (talk) 04:34, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

I think this entire article focuses on both the origin of Polygamy within the LDS religion (and the controversy surrounding whether or not it came from Joseph Smith or Brigham Young). It does not discuss the actual practice of polygamy in the LDS church in Utah and the continued practice of Polygamy by other church branches today. I think the current title is accurate and appropriate. --Coppercable (talk) 15:27, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Upon reflection, the current title, "Origin of Latter Day Saint polygamy" is a little loaded. It implies that Latter Day Saint polygamy is ongoing and pervasive, which is only true for a very small number of Latter Day Saints. However, the suggested title changes do little to fix this issue, and the current title seems better. ...comments? ~BFizz 15:34, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
You guys may be forgetting this is the first article in a series of three articles - it used to be one massive article and was split into Origin of Latter Day Saint polygamy, Latter Day Saint polygamy in the late 19th century, and Current state of polygamy in the Latter Day Saint movement. Take that into consideration as you rename the article or change its scope - which may require merging content from the other two articles.--Descartes1979 (talk) 21:16, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

1850s: official sanction

I've searched for a citation for the BY quote where he allegedly states "It has been a long time publicly known, and in fact was known during his life, that Joseph had more than one wife." As far as I can tell it originates from A journey to Great-Salt-Lake City, Volume 1 By Julius Lucius Brenchley (1861), however a citation is missing in that book as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.248.43.222 (talk) 10:36, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
