United States organic rule explicitly requires soil management edit
In the United States, organic crop production is statutorily defined in 7 CFR Part 205 National Organic Program Final Rule. That Rule includes the following language.
"A producer of an organic crop must manage soil fertility, including tillage and cultivation practices, in a manner that maintains or improves the physical, chemical, and biological condition of the soil and minimizes soil erosion."
"The producer is required to implement a crop rotation, including but not limited to sod, cover crops, green manure crops, and catch crops. The crop rotation must maintain or improve soil organic matter content, provide for effective pest management in perennial crops, manage deficient or excess plant nutrients, and control erosion to the extent that these functions are applicable to the operation."
Because hydroponic crop production uses no soil, "organic hydroponic" is not possible under US law. Phytism (talk) 15:51, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
