Orchestre de la Société des concerts du ConservatoireOrchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire – The word "concerts" in the name "Société des Concerts du Conservatoire" is capitalized in these English sources: the 2001 edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians in the article on Paris (as well as Grove Music Online, which also includes articles from The Oxford Companion to Music and The Oxford Dictionary of Music, the latter using the longer title: "Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire"), as well as D. Kern Holomon's 2004 study of the orchestra's history, The Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, 1828–1967, which uses "Société des Concerts" throughout. The Dictionnaire de la musique en France au XIXe siècle has an article with the title "Société des concerts du Conservatoire", but obviously this book is in French. Since this is the English Wikipedia, I favor following English practice. --Robert.Allen (talk) 03:19, 22 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment - good of you to put in a RM, but you could just revert the undiscussed move. If proceeding with RM however then Support - the capital 'C' is used in many French sources as well, and expect to see small 'c' in English ones too, either way it isn't wrong for a title like this. After your comments I was curious to see how frequently "concerts" is not capitalized in English books, so I searched Google Books for "société des concerts du conservatoire". Of the first 30 hits (counting only legitimate English books published within the last 50 years; I did not count Billboard magazine. which turned up a lot, even though it generally capitalized it, sometimes even capitalizing "Orchestra De La" which surely is not correct) I did find five books that do not capitalize it, which was actually more than I expected. Still, they are rather outnumbered by the other 25. (And I did run into one French book that capitalizes it, but there were several others that did not, so that seems to be rare.) So the conclusion seemed to hold that it is usually capitalized in English, but not in French. --Robert.Allen (talk) 22:36, 28 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
