Creation edit

Hello: I've created the new article Orca (Jaws boat), the sharkfishing boat from Jaws as an adjunct to what was not covered in the article Jaws (film). This article is notable and of encyclopedic value based on its dual nautical and cinematic relevance, and place in popular culture. Its independant encyclopedic value is noteworthy because its history as a non-fictional boat predates its depiction as a fictionalized craft. This rationale should best address the the following concern:

  • Non-notable fictional boat. Unencyclopedic. At best merge to Jaws (film)

The general context of article Jaws (film) does not allow for the detail required therein, specifically related to data pertaining to Orca (Jaws boat), thereby validating this articles necessity. Furthermore, several attempts to add a website link to Jaws (film) concerning the history of "Orca (Jaws boat), the shark fishing boat from Jaws" were denied, thereby validating this articles requisite existence. Therefore, I overtly protest any question as to the value of this articles existance based on the preceding substantiated rationale.

Some of it might fit into the Production section, as long as it is referenced properly. The JPStalk to me 11:50, 22 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

discussion of merge reco for Orca (Jaws boat) edit

Apparently there is some question whether this article should be merged into Jaws (film). Although reasonable people can differ on this, there are several factors that suggest it may not be appropriate to proceed with the merge:

For example:

  • Wikipedia already has a well-populated category Category:Fictional ships (applicable here);
  • The subject of this article is mentioned in List_of_fictional_ships, thus suggesting independent notability;
  • Jaws (film) is only one aspect of the Jaws franchise, which includes video games and the novel upon which the movie is based. Each one of these (potentially) contains a citable reference to the ship, and therefore this article would be notable in more than just the context of the film;
  • This article has at least one cited reference already, and more could be added by reference to the novel and possibly other sources;
  • Under WP:MERGE there are four basic indications for when a merge is appropriate. None of them seem particularly applicable here; and
  • A quick review of this discussion page suggests no compelling rationale for supporting the merge has yet been offered by any contributor
    • (all I've seen is "non-notable" and "fictional boat" ... both of these rationales lack credibility for reasons enumerated above).

Conclusion: Absent a compelling rationale to support the merge, (consistent with the terms of WP:MERGE) it seems appropriate to give those who support a merge some time to state their case here in discussion; then the matter can proceed from there. If the supporters do not present a clear rationale, it seems entirely appropriate to remove the merge tags and allow this article to continue being developed independently. This would include adding the appropriate categories to the article, adding notable references that occur outside the film, and linking to other articles where the subject is mentioned. dr.ef.tymac 14:28, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

While I'm sure that might be possible, 'Some' devoids the allowance of complete subtextual data for which the full extent of this article was written and thereby can be continuously developed independantly. Fred-stine 11:41, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Per dr.ef.tymac Absent a compelling rationale to support the merge I've removed the merge tag thereby allowing this article to continue to be developed independently as a stand alone article. I encourage interested parties to add appropriate categories to the article, adding notable references that occur outside the film, and linking to other articles where the subject is mentioned. 221.218.103.21 17:52, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

This link should be deleted. It would've been Orca (Jaws) anyway. Imagine Reason (talk) 18:15, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
