Largest slum in Asia is cited edit

Orangi Town is now considered "Asia's largest slum", after surpassing the size of Dharavi in Mumbai, India.[1]

Is Orangi Town really a slum? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.134.68.71 (talk) 00:11, 25 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bihari edit

Please stop the in Orangi Town. I have lived in Orangi Town so may be I know more about it. The Biharis are Muhajirs and so please stop distinguishing them. The Muhajir identity includes all Urdu speaking people that migrated to Pakistan. The nastaliq script is neither used in most Pakistani related articles in Wikipedia and nor in 200 articles relating to Karachi neighborhoods. If you have any objections then discuss your complaints in talk page. AlphaGamma1991 (talk) 21:40, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your argument can be easily addressed by hafiz muhammad mustafa s/o muhammad mushtaque "square is not a rectangle issue." Yes, Biharis are Mohajirs but not all Mohajirs are Biharis. According to "Mohajir's Pakistan", Mohajirs were "drawn from all over India" (p. 51). Another quote from the same text states that "Mohajirs of urban Sind are drawn from almost every district of India from UP and Bihar to Rajasthan and Gujarat; Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, and even Tamil Nadu" (p. 51). The text that I inserted in the article, from "Corpses or Rights" states that "It was during those days i.e. before 1986 that a public meeting was held in a locality inhabited by refugees from Bihar - Orangi Town Bihar colony of..." Another source from the Daily Jang also attests to the fact that Orangi Town is mostly composed of Biharis. Since this is an encyclopædia, it is best to used referenced information which is specific, rather than general. Per WP:RS, I am restoring the information I inserted into the article. If you still disagree, we can start an RfC here in order to resolve this issue. Thanks for your understanding. With warm regards, AnupamTalk 03:22, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Firstly, you must understand that the Muhajirs term includes all Urdu speaking people that migrated to Pakistan. This includes people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad Deccan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, etc. Secondly, Biharis term was used in East Pakistan as blanket term for all Urdu speaking people since most of them were from Bihar. When these Biharis moved from East Pakistan to Karachi them bceame part of Muhajirs. They are still called Biharis by many people since they came from East Pakistan, most of them did not have NIC, were poor and live in slum areas. In Karachi, they are part and parcel of Muhajirs. Most of the Biharis moved to Karachi after 1971 and not in 1947. The links that you provide say that large number of this slum's inhabitants comprise of the Biharis that does not mean that majority of inhabitants in Orangi Town are Biharis. I would make the observation that in Orangi Town the largest group after Muhajirs is Pakhtuns (Pathans). The second link mentions Bihar Colony which in fact is in Lyari Town and not in Orangi Town.AlphaGamma1991 (talk) 13:22, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Your first statement validates the referenced one I gave above. In the last source I gave, slum is an appositive which indeed does refer to Organgi Town. I have made some slight changes to the article and I hope these changes will be acceptable to you. I have started by removing your "one million statement" because it is redundant since a more accurate population is given in the subsequent sentence. Also, why do you mention Kashmiris among the ethnic groups? According to Ethnologue, there are only 105,000 Kashmiris in all of Pakistan. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
