  • Consider reformatting the dates in your Enactment Timeline section. Instead of having them in bold, make a table and list the date and event or make it a bulleted list. Use Timeline of European exploration or Timeline of World War I for reference.
  • Avoid having article links right next to each other. I think linking the list of Alaska governors and Jay Hammond next to each other may confuse readers. Either rephrase the sentence so they aren't next to each other or remove the link to list of Alaska governors.
  • Avoid overlinking by remove links that are not helpful in the context, such as major geographic features (Nantucket, Massachusetts). Refer to Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Linking
  • Citations should not be included in section/subsection headings
  • The Department of Interior's MMS links to the Department_of_the_Interior_and_Local_Government_(Philippines) page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Totranm (talkcontribs) 04:06, 12 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Types of Claims

edit

The article would benefit from discussion of the types of claims, i.e. removal, property, NRDA, etc. It also could be improved with links to the relevant regulations (i.e. for NRDA, 15 CFR Ch. 990, for the NCP 40 CFR Ch. 330, and for other matters 33 CFR Ch. 133-138). Why the epa?

edit

Isn't this act administered by the NOAA in the Department of Commerce?

In 2005 the US Coast Guard assumed OPA 90 enforcement responsibilities. KubalaC (talk) 15:51, 5 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just looked over your article. I like the side box.

I have a couple of comments.

Why is it sometimes referred to as the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 and sometimes 1989? I think that needs to be clarified for a Wikipedia article. There has to be an official name.

I think the timeline would be a lot easier to read if it was a bullet list or table.

In general, when someone has time, the article needs some copy editing. I'm seeing lots of typos, sentence fragments etc. I fixed some.

I would consider putting this at the beginning of the timeline: "The U.S. Constitution, as interpreted in Gibbons v. Ogden (1824), gives Congress the sole authority to regulate navigable waters." Otherwise there needs to be more context for its current location.

I am also unclear on the exact rules the OPA imposed. I think it would be helpful to have a section after History and before Enactment: Concerns and Reactions that provides a snapshot of what the Act does to protect water from oil spills.

It's a good start to a complicated law. Franza615 (talk) 05:17, 7 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Comments from an uninvolved Wikipedian

edit

I think this article a lot gives a good overview of the context that led to the law, the law itself, and the effects the law had. A few thoughts:

  • The para that begins "After the Exxon Valdez oil spill, all new ships built to move between U.S. ports..." seems to stray from the topic of the article and could likely be cut.
  • I would integrate the timeline into the rest of the article
  • I would put the 1998-2002 lawsuit in a separate section called "Legal challenges" or something to that effect.
  • What does the reference to "international protocols" mean? Does this have anything to do with the Act itself?
  • The later sections of the article overlap and aren't well differentiated. For example, much of the "long term effects" section and "enforcement" section simply summarizes the law itself. Maybe it would make sense to expand the section summarizing the law and put all this content in there.
