Merge With Permanent Signal

I believe this article should be merged with permanent signal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_signal) to to their hand-in-hand status. The off hook tone is a result of a permanent signal. Since a consequence of someone causing a permanent signal is usually an off hook tone, this should be merged into it. Kringga (talk) 21:16, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Merging Discussion

@Kbrose, Interlude65, Bde1982, Kvng, and Srleffler: I have proposed merging this article with permanent signal. Your discussion is welcome on this topic. If you could, please recruit other potentially interested editors. Discussion is on article talk page as always. Kringga (talk) 21:31, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Hey, it's cool.—Bde1982 (talk) 21:46, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
While it is true that an off-hook tone (to the subscriber end) is the result of a permanent signal condition, this is not a universal description. The permanent signal is indicated to the switching system, the other direction. Permanent signal is a also broader term that also applies to trunk circuits, for example. In fact, the term has a much broader usage in all kinds of communication systems, including in railroad signaling, for example. I can well imagine situations in which someone might want to split the article again in the future. Kbrose (talk) 17:09, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

The result of this discussion was Don't Merge. Kringga (talk) 14:59, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Listed are the key takeaways of the decision to not merge Off-Hook Tone with Permanent Signal.

  • The off-hook tone is not exclusive to the local loop telephone network.
  • The article Permanent Signal could actually be split in the future due to it's prevalence in other forms of communication (e.g railroad signalling, trunk signalling, etc.)
  • Both articles do not have enough topic overlap to justify merging.
  • The two articles should not be merged without starting another discussion due to the decision made here.
