Brumberg edit

This article incorrectly used a Wiki to claim the term had been around since 1997, but it appears to have been coined by Brumberg JJ in 1988. I can't locate full text. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 13:45, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Crisp edit

The attribution of "weight phobia" to Arthur H Crisp seems to have come from the discussion of anorexia nervosa at p.298 of OCLC 882539837, which cites his 1977 paper PMC 1543128 as evidence to support "...term coined by Arthur H. Crisp to describe the anorexic's attitude toward being of a normal body weight". That Crisp paper in turn includes a citation of his own 1965 PMC 1898930. My reading of that 1965 paper doesn't find any mention of "weight phobia". The closest it comes is a passing "Meanwhile, fear of, or guilt at, gaining weight in the direction of this biological threshold introduces a further affective factor influencing eating behaviour." However, in a different 1977 paper PMC 1543424 he does use "weight phobia" in a descriptive passage about anorexia nervosa on p.687. There, he clearly did not intend it as an alternate diagnosis, but as clarification of the same condition. He writes there that "The presence of weight phobia or shape or volume phobia and the overriding terror of fatness, within the context of low body weight and its attendant features described above, is pathognomonic of anorexia nervosa."

By 1993 there was direct debate of whether weight phobia should be a central diagnostic criterion of AN (see PMID 8379548 and PMID 9156686). More recently, PMC 3363377 looking at cultural contexts, said "This suggests that weight-phobic and non-weight-phobic anorexia are context-dependent manifestations of the same disorder. Therefore, it is recommended that fear of weight gain is not required for the diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, provided that behaviours maintaining underweight or other psychopathology suggestive of eating disorder are present." This recommendation was, according to PMC 4102299, slated to go into ICD-11. Relying on Bing translation, there's a closely parallel discussion relating to the DSM-V revisions discussed in Dutch here.

I'm not sure how to procede with any of this. Comments? Suggestions? LeadSongDog come howl! 18:24, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I dunno ... redirect to anorexia with a discussion of the history of the matter, employing the term?? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:51, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sigh...here we go again with the reification of terms - tend to think this should be a redirect. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:55, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
"Reification"? Good word, but new to me. Looking at Fat Phobia Scale it appears that the literature available is (almost?) all primary, and that different papers have examined the scale in reference to either perception of other people (PMID 25474195 e.g.) or self perception, but the scale itself seems ambiguous. The claims of validation appear to have been done in the context of using the test to measure perception of others. In any case, I don't see a real need for keeping Fat Phobia Scale or Obesophobia without secondary sources to establish that they have notability distinct from the basic concepts. At most, I'd see them as short sections in Anorexia nervosa or Weight bias. LeadSongDog come howl! 21:07, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Almost a year has passed since the end of this discussion and the page getting redirected to Anorexia nervosa. I'm wondering if this is worth revisiting. LeadSongDog's suggestion to have the contents moved to sections at either Anorexia nervosa or Weight bias doesn't seem to have materialised: the latter page was deleted while the former doesn't even mention obesophobia. Any thoughts anyone? Uanfala (talk) 22:43, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think we can take that long silence as effective agreement, if you'd care to proceed. LeadSongDog come howl! 02:12, 17 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have no knowledge in this area so all I could do is copy+paste the content into a section in another article. Should that be Anorexia Nervosa or Fat Phobia Scale? 07:32, 17 March 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uanfala (talkcontribs)
