Talk:Obesity in Australia

Neutral? edit

FYI, I have no expertise in this area at all. The article is generally very well-written and captivating but everything seems to be pointing towards the doomsayer POV that there is a catastrophic rise in obesity levels in Australia. My limited knowledge comes from the press, which is quite sensationalist when it comes to these types of isses but even the media occassionally reports of research contradicting the notion that the percentage of obese adults and children has risen over the past few decades.

I personally don't know the authenticity of the sources from either side of the debate but if there is any sort of reliable research that goes against the mainstream alarmist view, it should be incorporated into the article, with the weight it deserves (probably much less than the increasing obesity view). Well, one of the articles I did cite made note that the obesity rate for children is not going up like people have said. The other sources I found, sad to say, pretty much corroborate a "doomsayer POV." I think a lot of people tend to think that obesity is "an American problem," which is why I wanted to write this article. Australia in particular has had a very high problem with it, and hopefully I can expand it a bit more to explain why that is. One section I really want to tackle is perhaps a correlation between obesity and immigrant populations, like people from southern Europe. Mike H. Fierce! 10:55, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Went ahead and mentioned "contradicting notions" under childhood obesity. That's the only place where I could find any other conflicting reports. Mike H. Fierce! 11:52, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for replying. Yeah it wasn't really meant to be a criticism. More like a "Make sure you've added the other side of the story if it is relevant" comment. I wasn't denying that Australia has an obesity problem. From personal experience, I would agree with most of this article. GizzaDiscuss © 15:02, 5 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re: formatting edit

Someone needs to clean up the code here

A$25 billion (US$20 billion), ref name="abc">"

That is what shows up when you view the main article — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.224.200.13 (talk) 20:07, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

First paragraph edit

Vague statements from non-Australian sources about effects of obesity and "complementary" conditions have been removed. Writing quality from first para is not high enough for encyclopaedic reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Markbenjamin (talkcontribs) 11:05, 27 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
