Note: It seems like my edit at 20:51, 30 May 2005 got merged with another edit the same day due to a DB error or something. I just changed the last papagraph regarding the origin on Gunray's name. - 65.37.44.159 (talk · contribs)

Looks like it fixed itself, n/m - 65.37.44.159 (talk · contribs)

What was the official reason given for the Trade federations wanting Naboo?

What was the official reason given for the Trade federations wanting Naboo?

- As far as I know, they blockaded it in protest of Republic taxation on trade routes. They stood to lose a great deal of power and money if the tax law went through, or something along those lines.

Connection to Ronald Reagan & Newt Gingrich

edit

A passage should be added describing the origin of the name "Nute Gunray". It is highly likely that the choice of the name is meant to be a political statement by George Lucas critical of Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich.

Consider that if you switch the syllables, "Gunray" is almost phoenetically identical to "Reagan".

And "Nute" is phoenetically identical to "Newt". (Please note that the movie was produced while Newt Gingrich was the Speaker of the House. By the time the movie was released, Dennis Hastert was the Speaker.)

An editor with a good knowledge of Star Wars and 1990s politics should add an appropriate passage.

The Nute part of it is more than likely a reference to Reagan's movie, "Knute Rockne, All American. I read several years ago that it was in retaliation to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Defense_Initiative DeathWeed (talk) 09:55, 30 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Quite persuasive, regarding Gingrich - it's obvious in 1999 everybody familiar with the US political screen would read "Nute Gunray" as a reminiscence of Newt Gingrich which was quite quoutable at the time 188.130.179.3 (talk) 18:01, 2 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

the look of nute gunray also resembles the droopy, sagging cheeks of newt gingrich. as well. i think beyond just the name, the appearance is slightly inspired by him — Preceding unsigned comment added by 181.66.171.31 (talk) 11:48, 18 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Cleaned up

edit

I've removed the three cleanup tags:

  1. Excessive summary - I pared as much from the plot summaries as possible while still retaining a brief synopsis of his roles in each.
  2. Sources - I added a source for the racism controversy and removed the weasel-worded excuse at the end of the section. If further sources are needed, please use {{cite needed}} tags at specific points.
  3. In-universe language - I think the way the article is organized into sections, each dealing with a different film/book/game, along with the removal of a lot of the unnecessary plot points, should take care of this.

Those were the big changes, along with some reorganization and general cleanup. As with pretty much all pop culture articles on Wikipedia, I'm sure there's still plenty more that could be fixed. Kafziel Complaint Department 06:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

edit

Shouldn't this article also include brief summaries of his role in the ongoing Clone Wars television series, such as his attempt to bribe the capture of Senator Amidala and his caputre and then later rescue by Ventress? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.90.238.126 (talk) 18:31, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Redirect

edit

I've redirected this to List of Star Wars characters. While the information is verifiability, there is only fleeting third-party coverage to indicate any significance -- and that's only a tangent to larger attention aimed at Jar-Jar Binks. I've merged this content to the List of... --EEMIV (talk) 18:56, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
