No Love For Tricia Macke or the library?

Just out of curiosity, what was the logic behind completely removing Tricia Macke from the notable alumni section? She's a regional personality and on the local news nightly - even if her information has changed slightly (something I don't know for certain), it would seem she should still be mentioned in that section.

As to the library edit, seems like a valid criticism. It might be better off in a new section, though - possibly a "challenges and controversies" section (ala MIT and other schools or a "Miscellaneous" area. As many school libraries often house museums and offices, it just seems a bit out of place where it is. Clogar 04:03, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Rape Statistic

The article in question is not "relevant to campus life information" in any way. The "relevant campus news source" has since retracted and re-edited the article in question - you can find the new version here: http://media.www.thenortherner.com/media/storage/paper527/news/2007/02/28/News/Program.Addresses.Sex.Sexual.Assault-2747270.shtml

So, the source article that is cited for the quote is no longer relevant. Further, the quote itself is misleading and - as printed - incorrect (the reason the article was re-edited). To be precise: "I believe that 26 percent is a fairly accurate estimate of the percentage of total rape victims," is the statement Dr. Breitenbecher gave. Note the words "total rape victims." She's talking about the overall number of women raped everywhere - not specifically at NKU. The article gives the impression that 26% of women that attend NKU will be raped while on campus - and that simply is not what Breitenbecher was saying.

Further, NKU's Crime Statistics can be found here: http://ope.ed.gov/security/search.asp (search for public 4-year universities in Kentucky) There was only one reported rape on-campus last year. This directly refutes the article's (now retracted) implication that 26% of NKU's female students will be raped on-campus. Clogar 02:46, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

On March 21, The Northerner ran an article about the article in question. Dr. Breitenbecher was not misquoted, nor was her statement taken out of context. Despite the campus crime statistics report, she believes that the majority of rapes involving NKU women and men occur before they attend the university or off campus. The new article can be read here: http://media.www.thenortherner.com/media/storage/paper527/news/2007/03/21/News/Headline.Prompts.Reaction-2782955.shtml --Spacini 16:13, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

We disagree. :) Even the article you cite has the editor writing that the headline misled some students. But, since all parties agree that the vast majority of the incidents happened prior to attendence at NKU, it is really a dead issue here. Clogar 03:07, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Faculty Added

I've added Stephen Leigh to the 'Notable Faculty' section, as he's a fairly well known SF/F author, and a creative writing professor. 66.42.225.136 05:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Controversy text

In 2006, a professor and several of her students were disciplined by the university after they removed a display posted by a campus anti-abortion organization. Most media accounts failed to mention the fact that the display was posted on a lawn where students often gathered on blankets, and that the lawn was not open to displays. The university also filed criminal charges against the professor and students who removed the display. (However, the university had refused to file charges or take disciplinary action against students who had vandalized posters that supported other positions, even when the posters were posted in approved areas.)

The professor and students were subsequently acquitted of the criminal charges, even after the university sought the maximum penalty against the 67-year-old professor.

The university and its defenders cited the fact that the university took swift action against the professor and students as evidence that the university took freedom of speech seriously. However, a few weeks later, the university turned away protesters who demonstrated against an appearance by George W. Bush. Critics charged that the university upheld free speech only when it applied to conservative views.

Controversy removal rationale

Two things - 1. I'm an NKU student. 2. I'm Liberal, and support the professor in question. However, this section suffers from huge POV problems. Lets get it right here (and source it.) then move it back to the main article.--Cliffb 21:00, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

A good source for this is The Last Word of May 18, 2006, and of June 28, 2006.

Commuter College & Non-trad students

I'm fairly new to the Northern Kentucky area, but I keep hearing that NKU is a commuter college attracting a larger than average number of non-traditional students. Both of these items, if true, seem to me to be highly relevant to the article, yet neither is mentioned.

I hesitate to add this to the article as this information constitutes both hearsay and original research.

Perhaps someone more with greater knowledge might make mention of it (again if it's true.)

I think almost every college in the greater Cincinnati area is considered "commuter" - I've heard it about UC, UCC, Xavier, etc... (you have to get out to Miami Oxford to break that rule, it seems). One way to show this would be to post the percentage of students that 1) live on-campus or 2) live within a five-mile radius. I don't have either of those numbers available, but that information is what you'd want to post. Clogar 08:08, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

George Clooney Alumnus

I don't believe he was an alumnus as he did not graduate.--71.67.123.12 (talk) 08:02, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Although I prefer limiting alumni to graduates, I know some others think it is OK to include people that attended but did not graduate. I don't know if we have a policy one way or the other. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 14:38, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
The word Alumnus/Alumni has a few definitions, in the United States it is most often used with people who graduate from a college but it also has a broader definition to anyone that attended a particular college. It's pretty common to have famous alumni that didn't graduate listed- athletes and famous people commonly don't stay all four years and decide to go make their millions sooner rather than later. In fact, where Division II athletes tend to stay longer and have higher graduation rates, there'll likely be a few more non-graduating alumni added to the list with NKU's move to NCAA Division I. Notable alumni, faculty, and staff

The practice on most lists of this type is to use the presence of a Wikipedia biography as the standard for notability. In other words, every entry should have a blue link. It looks like about a third of the entries in this list are not linked. Someone should check to see if any unlinked names can be linked to existing articles, and the rest should be deleted.   Will Beback  talk  23:39, 13 August 2011 (UTC)
