Routing from Hoboken

edit

The map is incorrect. There was never a direct connection from Hoboken to the Northern Branch. In the last few years of passenger service, when trains terminated at Hoboken, they had to make a reverse move using a section of the old Erie Main Line. For example a southbound Northern train would run into the Erie tunnel, reverse up the Main Line almost 2 miles (using the former Main Line route to Erie terminal), and then go forward again using the Main Line's connection to Hoboken. This awkward move was a significant factor in the decision to discontinue passenger service. (The same move would have been necessary for Susquehanna trains, which had run to Erie terminal but never ran to Hoboken.) I would fix the map if I knew how. When I expanded the line map, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to display both Hoboken and Pavonia. After a while, I just gave up and created what you see now, knowing that it wasn't quite accurate. If you can figure out how to make this accurate in 3 columns, let me know. I didn't want to add an otherwise unused 4th column (wasting a decent amount of space on the page), but I could probably make it accurate if I do add the column. --Scott Alter (talk) 04:21, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
I see what you mean. I tried drawing it a few times. JoeBrennan (talk) 18:13, 5 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sparkill

edit

The Nyack and Northern ran all the way to Sparkill. It came downgrade from Piermont to Sparkill, not reaching the same level as the Erie until the crossing at Orangeburg Road, where it joined into the end of the Northern. Thus, I undid a small change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoeBrennan (talkcontribs) 21:28, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

So, does that make this a Northern Branch station? Jim.henderson (talk) 00:26, 14 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect template is historical and belongs in that section

edit

Among the many other mispresentations in this article (the most glaring being that the Northern Branch starts in Jersey City) is that the incorrect template (showing service continuing from Pavonia to Hoboken) a list of stations where the line does not stop. It is a diagram of historical stops on the line, and as such should be placed in the that section. To include it in the lede is to infer that trains still call at them and that is is deceptive and confusing. Djflem (talk) 07:06, 25 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

That's an incorrect understanding of the diagram. Historical stations are included on current line diagrams, but in a lighter color to indicate their closed status. It represents the line throughout its entire history. See the diagram at the Pascack Valley Line article for an example; it also includes closed stations, distinguished by the lighter color.
As for the south end, the Northern Branch did run to Pavonia. It was the only Terminal the Erie used before 1956. It's only under the current ownership that part of it is considered separate, as mentioned in the text. The diagram could be a bit clearer, but it does show them as separate terminals. oknazevad (talk) 22:54, 26 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Where are the articles for the other stations?

edit

Hello, people. Recently, I noticed that only few of the stations have articles attached with them, so I was wondering if we should make articles for these. Kind regards, M R T R A I N S 2 2 7 22:24, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

That depends on which if any of the planned stations can be considered the same as the historic stations. While the historic they stored stations should have articles, as train stations are presumed notable, and therefore worthy of articles. But, it's unclear if the new stations should have articles yet, as they don't exist yet. oknazevad (talk) 22:47, 27 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Oknazevad: I was not talking about the proposed stations, I was talking of the former ones that were served by the Erie Lackawanna Railway stations on this branch. M R T R A I N S 2 2 7 21:15, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
That's what I meant by "historic stations". As for why they've never been created, no one has gotten around to it. It'd be a good way to grow the encyclopedia if you want to undertake such a task. I'd recommend checking in at the New York area public transit project to we if anyone else might be willing to help. I'll gladly look over anything you come up with, but it's a busy season for me so I can't be too involved. oknazevad (talk) 02:29, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
