Unintuitive and misleading name

The explanation is given, but for the uninintiated it's a very misleading name because it's named in reference to some other part of the state (the Northern Tablelands), and not in reference to its location within the state overall. The region is clearly slap bang in the middle of the north-east of the state, not the north-west. It would be like naming the area around Ballina the "south coast" because it happens to be south of Tweed Heads. -- Jack of Oz ^{[your turn]} 23:30, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

It is fairly common for places that are in the eastern half of the state to be still described as being in the west. Tamworth is an example which is often mentioned as being in western New South Wales. In Queensland the South West and Central West regions extend far into the eastern half of the state. Not all names are literal. In this case the name may come from the slopes being in the north of the state and on the western facing slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The article is only rated in start class so it has quite a fair way to go before it thoroughly explains things. - Shiftchange (talk) 02:50, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
