The fact that they use meaningful symbols that aren't explained makes this article pointless to approach unless you already know its contents.

I whole-heartedly agree, and this is a pet-peeve of mine for statistics in general. I come from a more formal mathematics background, where EVERY variable is usually defined somewhere ("given a set A of integers a1, a2, a3, .....", etc). I'd like to see such variables always defined.
