Infection
editIt is an old superstition that infection causes a non-union! A non-union is caused by mechanical instability between fracture ends, by interposition of soft tissue or necrotic bone in between the two main fracture ends or when there is gap because of loss of bone. I have operated durn the past 40 years on a few hundreds of very septic fracures and non unions, in Europe and in Africa, using AO internal fixation methods and, if the fixation is biomechanically correct and made stable by a strong interfragmentary compression, the non union heals in never longer than 8 weeks and in most of the cases even the infection subsides.
