Feature list

Let's try and get a comprehensive list of features on this as soon as possible. There are still a lot of things that haven't been talked about yet. Where's the power button? And does the stylus look bigger to anyone else, or is it just because the system itself is a lot smaller? 66.41.212.243 07:47, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

I removed this sentence:

Thanks to a different placement, the power lights are now more visible when the clamshell is closed

The power lights are visible when the clamshell is closed in the old model as well. The removed sentence gave the impression the old model didn't allow that. The new lights seem bigger, though. -- ReyBrujo 07:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Please note the "more visible" part of the sentence.

The powerbutton is positioned on the back of the device. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.80.103.98 (talk • contribs) .

No it isn't, it's positioned on the right side of the device. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.215.4.67 (talkcontribs)

A couple other pieces of info i'd like to see
- screen dimensions
- battery type (removable, AA, etc?)
—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.224.78.250 (talkcontribs)
I have seen on a sight that the new DS Lite system comes packed with a battery charge adaptor, and although I know it was from a respectable source, I cannot find the URL. If someone else has the time, search for a respectable source. I have no reason to doubt the battery used in the normal DS is suitable for the new one. It has decent life, and with the LCD brightness adjuster, shouldn’t it just help in extending the life?
IGN has stated “The modified dual screen handheld has been tweaked into a smaller chassis. The new unit measures up to 133 mm wide by 73.9 mm tall by 21.5 thick. (that's compared to 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm in the original.) DS Lite weighs 218g, compared to the 275 g of the original.”
This, to me, implies that the screen size remains the same. I’m still new to wiki, and I am pretty sure that implied facts can’t be listed, but wouldn’t a source state it being smaller if it was?
--160.81.78.102 02:21, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
The battery of the Nintendo DS Lite, like the original Nintendo DS, is a lithium-ion battery not meant to be removed from the system, and it comes with an adapter. Nintendo would not suddenly switch to alkaline batteries after having released three models that don't use it.

The Ninth Bright Shiner (talk) 18:22, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I was told by a nintendo promotional officer, that ds lite came with a small 4g hard drive. Havent heard word of it since, but still want to check if true... Anyone know?

Buttons

Seems that someone is unable to see photographs, or never seen a Nintendo DS for real. The face buttons are A/B/X/Y. So the phrase The layout of the controls has been adjusted slightly, with the Start/Select buttons being moved to below the A/B/C/D buttons is wrong. --Olpus 01:23, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Is the DS Lite really going to have no thumb strap? There are a lot of games where using the stylus would be much harder, Mario 64 DS for example. I think the article should mention that too. 87.254.64.74

I haven't heard about a thumbstrap. What is it for; do u really need it??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.9.77.16 (talkcontribs)

I've been wondering about that too. The only place I've read that is on Wikipedia. I don't see any other websites mentioning the absence -or- inclusion of the thumb strap. Is there a source to back this information up? --82.175.74.196 11:34, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, mine came with one, so I think it's safe to assume the rest include one, too —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.131.85.208 (talkcontribs)

From what I remember reading, the DS Lite didn't come with a thumbstrap. However, it would be nice if someone from Japan could verify this. -- ReyBrujo 15:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, mine (US launch system) didn't come with one, but the back of the system still has a place to attach the strap. The above unsigned comment is either incorrect, or the strap was included with the Japanese units, but not the US ones. -- Alkane-man 02:46, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Mine didn't come with thumb strab and I'm a UK customer --MrBobla 08:11, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

More launch info?

Does anyone who speaks Japanese or is in Japan happen to know if stores in Japan have started taking pre-orders, or at what time they intend to open on the day of the launch? Not talking about import stores like Lik-Sang and Play Asia though that might be worth mentioning too.

Proteus IV 23:40, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

D-pad reduced to 18.6mm across (16% smaller), face buttons retain same dimensions.

This is the funniest thing I've read all week. It states that the points of a compass will still point north, south, east, and west. That's like saying "the DS will also obey the laws of gravity"

Objection! I think what the writer of that edit means is that the face buttons stay the same size, even though the +Control Pad will be reduced in size a bit. Dimension, referring to height and width... --BPM 04:34, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
That's not what it states at all. 'retaining the same dimensions' simply means 'retaining the same width/height/length.' Dimensions have little to to with the points of a compass. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.175.74.196 (talkcontribs)

Added new pictures.

Do with them as you please. Duo228 23:55, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Abbreviated Name

To save the time of writing "DS Lite", thereby appeasing the masses, should we start referring to the Lite as the LDS? DSL is obviously taken. This isn't relevant to the article per say, but could be if the term becomes widespread. Or not.

Save time? You'd have to be REALLY lazy if you can't take the time to spell out "Lite"... It's just four letters!... Oh, wait, I forgot... This is the Internet. Where there are many extremely lazy typists who won't even bother to spell out "you"... LDS is also taken... The Church of Latter Day Saints. :P --BPM 06:43, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
We probably shouldn't use it, as Nintendo has not specified any sort of nickname for the DS Lite. Call it as you may on your own, but probably not on Wikipedia. --The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 18:31, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Remove the crappy pictures?

I'd like to see the crappy DS lite pictures removed. They don't do the system justice. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nintendo_ds_lite_front.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nintendo_ds_lite_back.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nintendo_ds_lite_top.jpg

They seem to be some kind of prototype. Shall we remove these? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Xren (talkcontribs) .

I'm with him. In fact the whole picture gallery is pretty unorganized and ugly in general. We need better photos.66.217.163.90 01:29, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

That's fine, but the picture there stinks since it's doesn't look anything like a photo. It looks more like computer concept art with plenty of photoshopping. Can't we get a decent actual photo of one of these? Narcissus 07:48, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Wow the current pictures are very unprofessional, and just plain horrible. Looks like it was taken with a camera phone. Can we put back the official Nintendo press images? -- KPop / 15 June 2006 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.200.116.12 (talkcontribs) .

Sorry, but Wikipedia is not about beautiful images. The current pictures are free ones, which is one of the focus of this site. The 1st Fair use policy requests to use free images if these are available. I am reverting your changes (if nobody else has before). -- ReyBrujo 04:48, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

You may be a lawyer for all I know, and can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that means what you think it means. I believe that is standard text to indicate that Nintendo has warned the recipient and will not be held liable for any problems that may arise from the use of the images. This isn't so applicable to the consoles, and really only when the copyrights of another company are at issue, such as picture of a DS with Mickey Mouse displayed on the screen.
In addition, Nintendo makes it clear several sentences up, "the recipient may reproduce the Images without any alteration and solely for non-promotional, non-commercial and/or editorial purposes". This would be totally unnecessary if the images were truly free to be used for any and all purposes.
Also, please sign your comments properly by appending four tildes (~~~~) at the end. Dancter 07:41, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Added color section, reworked gallery area

As said above, I added a color section where I moved the pictures of the navy and ice Lite. I also added a few pictures to the gallery. If anyone doesn't like it then please say so. Duo228 02:14, 2 March 2006 (UTC) Edit: Moved a paragraph about the colors from the first section to the new one... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Duo228 (talkcontribs)

Supply problems/Released in Japan

The article needs to be updated to mention its release in Japan (to massive supply shortages and only one colour available). Does it still need the "forthcoming product" tag? Tphi 15:15, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

there was supposed to be an announcement yesterday at some keynote address in Japan but Nintendo, in their infinite wisdom, decided to ignore the topic completely. Addps4cat 18:17, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, isn't that just wonderfull? I have heard may from several sources but it is just speculation... Perhaps we should throw that date onto the page while clearly stating that the date is under speculation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony Leppert (talkcontribs)
The rumor going around is the reason NEW Super Mario Bros. keeps getting pushed back a week in America is to have it coincide with the release of the DS Lite. Release the system redesign with a Mario title. Seems like a pretty wise business decision, huh? And the reason for the push backs to make sure the US stock isn't a problem like it is in Japan. Of course, this is just speculation, and wouldn't be worth putting in the main article... --BPM 07:47, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Accessories

I'd like to point out that the Tilt-Sensor is NOT an accessory. It is built in to certain GBA Game Paks, and used only in those games. I think it's just Warioware Twisted and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. I don't believe that a technology built into certian games should be counted as an accessory. That's like saying that the clock is and accessory for the Game Boy since it was included in the Pokemon Gold and Silver games. -- Grant 20:16, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Adding info about the Opera webbrowser?

On February 15th, 2006 there was a http://www.opera.com/pressreleases/en/2006/02/15/ (press release) by http://opera.com/ (Opera software) stating that they would port their browser to the DS allowing people to surf the net with Opera on the DS. Would it be informative to add a little information about this on the DS lite page?

Omeow 12:38, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Nah, since there's already info about it on the Nintendo DS page. I think the DS Lite page should only cover information dedicted to the DS Lite, while the DS page covers everything DS. --BPM 06:00, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Competitors

The competitors section is useless - no other gaming article has a section similar and it just seems like a semi-innacurate advertisement for the other two systems. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.218.65.219 (talkcontribs) .

    • I agree, and what the heck is the GP2X? I never heard of that! It's not really a competitor is it? It's more of a gaming system out at the same time as the DS

(User: Zeldamaster3)

I agree, and its true that no other game systems have a "competitors" section. I've removed the section.JamesBenjamin 23:57, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
I've reinstated the competitors section, many other game systems articles have such a section, see [1]. We need to have a neutral POV here. Please, let's discuss. --Oscarthecat  21:40, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps the competitors stuff should be moved to the main DS article? It seems to me that the DS Lite article should keep to stuff that is distinctive about the new model. Dancter 21:52, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Agreed, if anything, it should be in the DS article not the DS Lite article, also, the GP2X is NOT a competitor, it is a homebrew console, while DS is commercial. --Mishy_dishy 21:43 6 June 2006 (UTC)

could we use this picture?

Yes, we could insert it with the other colors in the gallery, because there are no free replacements yet. -- ReyBrujo 15:59, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
And a correction. It gives us the possibility to use it under Fair use, it is not a free license. -- ReyBrujo 16:01, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

There is no need for fair use images as it is possible to take your own photo of the device. Flickr has quite a few free shots http://flickr.com/search/?s=rec&l=commderiv&w=all&q=ds+lite&m=text. ed g2stalk 10:43, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Screen size/dimensions

Does anyone know if the screen dimensions for the DS Lite are the same or different than the old DS? I think it would be a good pice of information to put on the page. Rembrandt 06:16, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

They are exactly the same. Amazing, i know. [some dude] —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.226.78.184 (talkcontribs) .

Box Contents

Would it be appropriate to add a list of what actually comes in the box, now that it's been released in the US and people actually, like, know? Mostly I wonder if the fact that it doesn't come with a wrist strap (or, more to the point, a thumb button) is something that should be noted. User.lain 05:17, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Don't know how to do it, but using an image with the name "IMG 0284" isn't ideal. Can the image be renamed? --Oscarthecat  21:09, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I think that would be a question to ask at the New contributors' help page or with the helpme template. But it wouldn't be such a trouble now, would it? At least it isn't named Image.jpg or something like that.--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 21:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

What was wrong with the original picture, I hate this "let's change the picture every week and no one says anything about it" accept of Wikipedia articles about game systems, look at the this 2 the Nintendo logo and the Nintendo DS are strangely missing and apparently I'm the only one who said anything about it. Here is another good example 3 the Xbox is covered in dust and it looks like the area around the power button melted. Sonic Hog 17:17, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Fair use, 1st. guideline. Always use a more free alternative if one is available. Also, If you see a fair use image and know of an alternative more free equivalent, please replace it, so the Wikipedia can become as free as possible. -- ReyBrujo 17:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

I still don't think that excuses the dustbox 4, and I still want to know why there are no logos on the DS picture5Sonic Hog 20:20, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Feel free to find better free images. Wikipedia is not about having award-winning pictures. Dusty or not, it is an Xbox, we are not showing it for marketing, only identification purposes. I can take a picture of my Nintendo DS which has the Nintendo DS logo, but someone will complain the screen is scratched. -- ReyBrujo 20:27, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Comparisons

I have both a Nintendo DS and a DS Lite and I took some pictures comparing the two to each other and looking at the differences. I'd be willing to put the pictures on this article if it helps with differentiating between the original and the Lite. What do you think? Would this be helpful? --Passerby Cat talk cat 03:44, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Sure. Just remember to upload them with a free license (like Creative Commons or GNU GFDL). -- ReyBrujo 03:49, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Image Gallery

The images we have are to be used until a replacement is avalible, and one is not. The pictures illustrate important points about the DS, and not free image I have seen does that while not looking unprofessional. I don't agree. You have added Image:DS 6.jpg, which can be replaced with Image:Nintendo DS Lite.jpg (which is already in the article). And you have also added Image:DS 7.jpg, which can be replaced with Image:Nintendo DS Lite closed.jpg, which is already in the article. I removed both images that were already found. If you want, you can take pics that show the stylus and the GBA cover, so that the gallery can be removed or completely replaced. -- ReyBrujo 01:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
That was my original plan... but my digital camera's battery died before I could, so I'm going to tomorow. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aido2002 (talkcontribs) .
No problem. The article won't look worse for not having two images that already exist :) -- ReyBrujo 03:40, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Your image of the moved Select/Start buttons is quite good, but could be a little brighter.(This can be easily done in Photoshop) The one with the Moved stylus and Power button is quite blurry and needs to be much brighter, perhaps you should try taking the picture again. - Zero1328 Talk? 05:24, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
I know... I wanted to upload the pics just to have something useable there, right now I will brighten them and replace the old ones with the bright ones. Also, taking a picture of the Lite often causes the flash to reflect off of the shiny white plastic, so I had to take it w/o the flash, causing both problems. (Picture would look less blurry if brighter)aido2002 21:17, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Really? Last I heard the official word was that they would not be phasing the original out as long as there is demand. --Guess Who 00:11, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
most likely the original ds will eventually just disappear from the shelves once they are all sold out with no real date given, kind of like the original gameboy advance. considering the ds lite is the same price as the original ds, there isn't much of a reason for nintendo to keep making the old model. Cancellorian 11:55, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
It was stated that, as long as there is demand, they will continue to produce the old model.http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=65719 Note that, in the UK DS Lite launch, Chart Trak stated DS were selling regardless of the new model, with half the sales being Pink DSs and Nintendogs bundles.http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=17965] With the new launch of the Pink DS Lite, they may phase it out in Japan, and as soon as they move to UK, they will phase it there as well. However, this is just speculation. -- ReyBrujo 19:24, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Father's Day Sale

I removed the following paragraph from the article, as I don't think it's necessary to mention a sale. (If it was, should we then have details every time about when every store has a sale on the DS?)

When released to the US and Canada, those signed up to the Nintendo Newsletter received an
email about the Nintendo DS Lite announcing that you could buy the Nintendo DS Lite and the
game Brain Age for the price of $129.99. This was a sale for Father's Day, which
was then 7 days away.

--Madlobster 01:00, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I suppose it isn't necessary. There could be dozens of sales for the Nintendo DS Lite across the globe, and we wouldn't be logging all of them. Good call.--The Ninth Bright Shiner talk 03:47, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
