Tena koutou and greetings from the heartland of Ngati Maniapoto.

It appears that much of the history on this main Wiki page has come from a particular variety of conspiracy theorists who still hold to the lie that Ngati Maniapoto and the Kingitanga were planning an attack on Auckland city, therefore that justified the states armies committing a pre-emptive invasion of Waikato tribal lands and carrying out many atrocities.

I will try to assist in the coming months to source reputable history sources for this article. In its current state it stands it is a fabrication of the history of my tribe, an affront to the sense of any respectable researcher of our area and an insult to my own intelligence. Its use of applying a broad brush to the tribe for a few isolated incidences, and completely leaving out any historical analysis of the real conditions in Te Rohe Potae, prior to the Crowns invasion and decimation of Waikato leaves us with no other option but to completely rewrite this section from start to finish.

Kia ora. While you are fully entitled to your opinion it seems you have either lost interest, been unable to find any reliable sources or had a change of heart. Perhaps Pei Te Hurinui Jones or Kelly would be a good place to start to fill out the very early history. Because belligerent Ngato Maniapoto took the lead during the 1860 -64 conflict it is only natural that most historians have focused on their role and their leaders. More could be written about the pre war struggles with Raukawa and Mahuta for mana whenua from reliable Maori sources -if you can find any- which will hopefully shine light on later actions. I agree that only part of the tribal history is told here and it does make the iwi look rather black. More could be added about Ngati Maniapoto being on the traditional "war path" between Waikato and Taranaki during the long running musket wars ( and probably before that) and the influence that had on tribal culture and leadership style. This page is a good place to put forward specific ideas to achieve a better balance of information.

In terms of the "attack on Auckland" it is not so much that Maniapoto PLANNED an attack on Auckland but that they actually did attack Auckland. You would have a hard time proving otherwise given the shear volume of reliable information that says it did happen. Maybe you are arguing that it was only part of the iwi? Lets have the detail. Of course other Waikatos took part, but it is indisputable that Rewi was behind the aggression. We have almost week by week accounts of what he said or did at this time for 2 years leading to the attacks. Some Maori such as Morehu Mc Donald these days say Rewi was right to attack Auckland. ie He was being a political realist in advocating extreme violence to what Maniapoto saw , at the time, as the correct path of action. Of course if you have information that says something different let's hear it. If its from oral tribal sources that's fine, as a start anyway, for the talk page.
