Former students

Danielle Panabaker was recently removed from the list, and I can't say I know who Joshua Harmony is either, but I suppose the Naperville Public Libraries have all of Neuqua's yearbooks, as the school hasn't quite been open for a decade yet. Not exactly something I planned to spend my holiday doing, but I guess if anyone else runs into this, we CAN use these resources to verify former students. --JohnDBuell 01:17, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Danielle is in the 2002 yearbook, but did not graduate from NVHS. I also couldn't find a "senior picture" for Burke Baldwin - I can only guess he graduated about 2003; he played varsity football for NVHS, then was drafted for baseball in an amateur draft. --JohnDBuell 18:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

School colors

I'm not at all affiliated with neuqua, but IHSA's official site says its Navy. Ill assume that you are better informed, however.

links to various neuqua affiliated websites

It is not unnecessary to link to other neuqua affiliated websites such as speech team, lacrosse team, and cross country team. These links provide great resources of information which is indeed encyclopedic. Also, it hardly does any damage to the page whatsoever because it simply turns the activities section a little more blue (hyperlinks). In this way, if one searches wikipedia for neuqua valley high school, and they want information on the lacrosse team, they would be able to visit that website for more information, rather than having to use a search engine which might not bring up what they wanted. John, you do a nice job of keeping wikipedia useful, but this is execessive policing.

Official policy would state otherwise. If anyone researching ANY school wants more information, they should go to the OFFICIAL school website, and follow external links from there (and many of the activity/team links are already provided on official school websites). Quoting Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files: "Wikipedia articles are not: Mere collections of external links or Internet directories. There is nothing wrong with adding one or more useful content-relevant links to an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia. On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite is appropriate, marking the link as such. See Wikipedia:External links and m:When should I link externally for some guidelines." Under the former, please read over "Links normally to be avoided." Wikipedia is not a collection of links. However, a high school's entry is vastly different than a comic book's entry where fan-sites are an issue. The quote you reference above seems to suggest that lists of links are to be avoided so they do not dwarf the article. On NVHS's page, the list is already there, taking up space, and it does not dwarf the article. The reasons to not link a page, as defined at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links , do not suggest that linking to a high school group or organization should be avoided. Commercialism (spamming) seems to be the main enemy here, and I fail to see how providing useful information for a non-commercial, non-profit, public school sanctioned organization is something that is against the Wikipedia policy. -Vince, NVHS Class of 2003

One problem is being able to prove to anyone outside of Naperville any significance in a ten year old school. Further, The article already has a couple of negatives going against it. These aren't codified, per se, but they ARE seen as detractions. One is that, except for the history, the article reads as a list of lists. Athletics and facilities could probably be easily rewritten as prose - someone really should find a published list of competitions and placements (ihsa.org perhaps), especially for events/activities where the school placed at least in the top three. The section on academics is another possible candidate for a rewrite as prose. The lists of activities and notable alumni, on the other hand, would be a bit more troublesome. With that done, adding a bit more for external links would not look like making JUST another list. The WikiProject on Schools provides some further guidance here: "Give a link to the website of the school, preferably one in the English language. You may also include other informational links that may interest readers, but whose contents might be beyond the scope of inclusion in the article." In other words, not a rehash of information that's already been cited here; well developed and maintained sites for those organizations which have consistently won awards would be a good candidate. --JohnDBuell 11:44, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Opening Date

A lot of profile pages list the exact date something opened on. With as recently as the school was opened (1997), it shouldn't be that hard to find the exact date the school formally opened for business. It should be in the Naperville newspaper's archives or maybe there's some local cable access footage of Naperville bigwigs formally cutting open a ribbon or something. If that can't be found, then the first day of classes in 1997 (presumably something in Late August '97) might suffice. Of course, that may be a matter of debate for all school pages: which is the valid "opening" date for a school, the date the school opens for business (presumably the same day as the ceremonial opening), like for teachers and staff to move stuff into their office, get a feel for the place, what rooms they'll be teaching in, etc, or the first day of classes in the first year they open? It's similar to sports teams: is their formal date listed for their establishment the date they are created on paper, the date the full staff is 1st assembled (pre-season), or the first professional game they play.

It may help with all of these school pages to have a map of their school district with the specific school's portion of that district tinted a different color. A snapshot of google maps or something like that with all major roads listed (i.e. Naper Blvd, 75th St, Ogden Ave, etc) that run through the district should be adequate. --Thirdmoon 03:10, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Sounds to me like you're volunteering. Google Earth has fairly accurate maps of all of the major Chicagoland school district boundaries, but I don't think they have actual school attendance boundaries, which will be subject to change once Metea Valley High School opens anyway. First date of classes usually DOES differ from the date of dedication. I've yet to see a school open the same day a dedication is held - though there is often a small ceremony on the first day of classes in a new building. --JohnDBuell 04:21, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Rumor

Although Neuqua Valley is obviously an expensive high school, is it true that at the time it was rumored to be the most expensive high school in the nation? I believe that there is an identical school in Minnesota. Should this comment be removed and replaced with some money value? New Photo of Neuqua Blue, Gold, and Frontier

I hope there is something more to this ...

I just deleted this statement from the article: The team also went on to win the Nike Midwest Regional and Nike Team Nationals meets.

Two things:

1. It is uncited, and it seems this claim would be easy to cite.

2. Given my knowledge of IHSA rules, unless this meet was held midseason, participation in this meet by Neuqua Valley would constitute a violation of off season competition rules, and, if true, could result in forfeiture of all awards won by the team for that season.

Now, there may be something to this ..... such as the team competing as an Aurora community team ... but if that is the case, then the school didn't actually win the meet. This is something that, taken out of context, can lead to an investigation. I strongly urge whoever put this up to find a citation that supports this being a legal (by IHSA rules) meet, otherwise someone might take this the wrong way. Just my two bits of advice! Nothing to worry about here... this national event is hardly something that the IHSA doesn't know about. The team competed as Naperville XC club, with the only IHSA restriction being that the coaches of the XC in IHSA season could not coach it out of season. Whew! I was a little worried about that. I was just worried that even if everything was on the level, it could get someone (like some rival looking for dirt) thinking about a way to cause trouble. In that case, my apologies and congratulations to some real runners. My only suggestion would be: for something this big (and it obviously is), make sure it gets properly cited.
