Future
editWhile I do not dispute the future status of the islands, it is quite a leap to assert that the Kingdom Islands will not have a team. Has the NAVU made any declaration of its intentions? Have FIFA or CONCACAF made any statement on how applications from ex-constituents of the Antilles will be treated? Many French overseas territories are full members of FIFA and the relevant Confederation: it is presumptive to assume that te same status will not be offered in this case. - Well, the dissolution has happened, and FIFA believe that the team have future matches under the name of the now dissolved country. Might be interesting to see how next Sunday's match is reported. Kevin McE (talk) 07:40, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
history
editQuestions of how the Netherlands Antilles team will proceed are still present; but I have a question about its relation to the "island teams" before the start of the Netherlands Antilles and during its existence. A couple of thoughts (NB: often with unsourced wikipedia pages as sources!);
- The Netherlands Antilles national team was constituted in 1921 according to FIFA; before the NL Antilles existed.
- The Curaçao national football team played its first game in 1924. Would that have been the "legal" predessor of the ANT-team (as the islands were called Curaçao and Dependencies then).... and would Federashon Futbol Korsou be the predecessor of NAVU? There seems even to be a FIFA country code CUR, so it might have been part of FIFA as such.
- Also "official football teams" of other islands exist(ed): Bonaire official football team and Sint Eustatius official football team, . They compete in inter-island games; for Bonaire, there is reference of pre 1949 games just like Curacao.
- For Sint Maarten national football team, the present situation is clearer (ConCaCAF member, not FIFA), but did they exist before 1949 as a team playing international games? .... the same question can be asked for Aruba national football team (FIFA+CONACAF) before 1986/1948...
I would welcome thoughts (and preferably sources) on this issue, so we can improve/make consistent the corresponding pages... L.tak (talk) 03:21, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
- I've replied at WT:FOOTY, but don't be lead astray by any claim of official for Bonaire or Sint Eust. That designation was recently applied and has little evidence behind it: it is a wiki-invention. Kevin McE (talk) 12:13, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
FIFA membership
editAs FIFA has put a new Curaçao page on their site (See article, link number 4), I think it's safe to assume that Curaçao will be taking over Netherlands Antilles membership at FIFA. The Netherlands Antilles Football Union had a meeting in February to ratify the name change to the Football Federation of Curaçao, and this was implemented (with the full support of the Bonaire Football Federation - I'm not sure where they themselves will stand in all of this ultimately). Therefore, I think a new page for Curaçao should be created in line with the policy of having a page for all other FIFA members' national teams. In the drop down list of associations on FIFA.com, Netherlands Antilles no longer appears - Curaçao appears instead. Mcruic (talk) 02:27, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
- Something has to be done... But what is the question. There is four teams which should be combined in 12,3 or 4 different articles and I am not sure what is the best solution at the moment. I'll make a table which might be useful anyway in the article:
Time | Team Name | Country Name | Islands in the country/territory | representing in practice | Governing Union |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
193x-ca1950 | Curaçao | Territory Curaçao | all 6 islands | ?? | CVB (Curaçaose Voetbalbond) |
1950-2010 | Netherlands Antilles | Netherlands Antilles | 5-6 islands | Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao | Nederlands Antilliaanse Voetbalunie (NAVU) |
2011- | Curaçao | Curaçao | Curaçao | Curaçao | Federashon di Futbol Korsou (FFK) |
ca1950-2011 | Curaçao | Curaçao (island territory) | Curaçao | Curaçao | Federashon Futbol Korsou (FFK) |
- So there are three potential Curaçao National football team wikis! Normally I would be strongly opposed on putting all the things called Curacao together because curacao before 1950 means so much more than Curacao afterwards. However in view of the fact that even as Neth Antilles the association was very strongly curacao-related and in view of the FIFA which simply sees Curacao as the successor of NA I suggest to treat it all in a single article. I think we can easily merge the info on the curacao team from 1950-2010 as it is a very informal team.
- My main question however is how to handle FFK. Clearly one existed already (probably organizating the curacao teams competition) and the NAVU changed its name to FFK (Possibly with the word di in the name). But whether those two are the same organization or will merge, or.. is still very unclear to me!
