Broadband services

Although Wimax is theoretically high speed, this is unlikely to be the case as Telkom (South Africa), the competition and current monopoly, has already deployed WiMax at the rate of 512kpbs. There is as such little reason to believe that Neotel will have any reason to deploy it at a faster rate, at least in the short term.

Compared to that, ADSL speed (in South Africa) is up to 4Mbps, so there will be little, if any, motivation to provide a faster service, at least until Telkom's monopoly on the SAT3 international access expires.

Of course, if you can provide a source for anything to the contrary, you are welcome to change it.

And yes, the page is quite old, but unfortunately Neotel did not do much since the page was created. (Not for the retail market, in any case.)

Hi G.A.S

The article I was referring to is [1], I wasn't aware of the newest one. Neotel wasn't planning on rolling out a fixed line network initially and are hoping for LLU (local loop unbundling) so I'm not sure what to make of it. The usual 512k limit is an artificial one imposed by Telkom and Neotel's CDMA has already surpassed this so I can't see their WiMax which they state as high speed true broadband as being less than 4Mb/s. Neotel's Broadband Page has some information. The problem is in ICASA has defined broadband as >256kbps, and Neotel themselves speak of higher than 1 or 2 Mbps[2] The main problem, however, is the up to part, for instance, EDGE is up to 480 Kbps ([3]), but I hardly get 56Kbps here. The problem that is keeping high speed bandwidth away, is the cost[4][5], even for local content[6]. There will be no use for broadband where the monthly cap can be used in minutes. Unfortunately, only time will tell. G.A.S 19:37, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I guess my point is that their initial service will be 250k to 750k (this is average expectation) which Neotel themselves has termed high speed internet and not true broadband. Where the line got blurred however was where they talked about high speed and low speed in the same breath. From the looks of things WiMax will be their first true broadband offering which is scheduled for the end of the year possibly in anticpation for SAT-3 being declared a national asset in november opening it up to competition. Telkom is also planning IPTV for which they are shortening the local loop to bump up speeds. -Andrew Nº 20:14, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree with the initial speeds. Furthermore, Although I agree that WiMax could be quite fast, I would not call it "high speed broadband" unless it is high speed by international standards and is cited as such. (ie where Neotel gives a speed estimate) We must be careful not to add speculation to the article. G.A.S 21:24, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

What would you think of CDMA as high speed internet and WiMax as low speed or normal broadband. It's seems in line with Neotel's comments and with that of most of the consumer base and it can be referenced. -Andrew Nº 21:40, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
