The intro of this article claims that certain modern breeds are continuations of pre-colonial Native American dog breeds. Later on, the "genetics" section contradicts this. I'm not an expert on this subject, but my guess is that the intro is incorrect. It is probably asserting something that was widely believed prior to being disproven by genetic studies. Actually, I think maybe the intro is trying to say the the correct thing here: "today they make up a fraction of dog breeds that range from the Alaskan Malamute to the Peruvian Hairless Dog"
I think the author may have intended to say that certain breeds have genetic contributions from pre-colonial breeds that amount to small fractions of those breeds genetic inheritance.
Following the lead of Interbreeding between archaic and modern humans, we could say something like: though small fractions of the genomes of some modern dog breeds are comprised of DNA derived from these lineages, they have largely disappeared. Samwagg0 (talk) 02:01, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
