Problems and issues
A section on "problems and issues" in the study of nationalism would seem useful. For instance, User:01011000, the article's author, seems particularly interested in the question of ethnicity, yet this is not mentioned in the article itself as yet. Some indication of the (rather troubled and problematic) relationship between nationalism and ethnicity, as addressed by different authors, would be useful. Obviously, this is far from being the only issue in the field, but it would be a start. --jbmurray (talk • contribs) 18:34, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
- I suppose I can see why you might think that I have a special interest in ethnicity, given some of the articles that I have created, but my own research focusses on nationalism. Leaving that aside, I do agree that this article will have to address ethnicity as well, but I think it would be better included in a discussion of the many debates in the field, rather than singling out the 'problem' of ethnicity as an issue of particular importance, which to my mind would just be POV.
- My plan for the article at the moment is to first work on the history of the field as such, and then follow up with a solid overview of the substantive debates in the field. How long this will take depends on how often I take breaks from writing my dissertation. – User:01011000 21:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Just a quick note in response to jbmurray's edit summary, "NB are these really further reading on nationalism studies, or on *nationalism*?" The answer is that they are both. The three books under "Introductions and overviews", for example, all provide histories of the study of nationalism as well as nationalism itself, and the encyclopedias under "Reference works" cover researchers, approaches in different disciplines, methodological issues, etc., along with the other things that you would expect, given their titles. – User:01011000 05:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
