Current staff section

Thinking there is no need for the entire staffing hierarchy on here, please can I have some more clarification please? Thesimsmania (talk) 22:22, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, it is unusual to have such comprehensive information about current staff members in an article. The information serves little encyclopedic purpose. As that section is unsourced, there should not be any problem with you removing that information. I have added the key_people parameter to the infobox, you could add a short list of the most important staff members there. Pol430 talk to me 23:13, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Alumni

I am beginning to wonder just what criteria are being used for the inclusion of an actor's name in the list of alumni, which currently stands at 91 and rising. Is it just to be used as a bit of free publicity for any jobbing actor with an NYT background, or should it be an expanded version of the list of fifteen "world-renowned" names as given on the NYT website? My own view is that only those actors who might be reasonably described as household names should be included. Ideally, someone from the NYT itself might prune it down to those past members whom they regard as particularly significant feathers in their cap. Peter Farey (talk) 10:54, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Just how illustrious do you have to be? That is a "winnowed" list, there's not an actor there who isn't a Known Name. I was an Alleyns pupil from the days when my colleagues provided fully half of the NYT in the late 60s/early 70s - and none of them made the list, despite some of them taking lead roles, Tank Yetzes for example in the film "If". Your solution, if needed, might be to spawn a separate meme containing this list - as part of a group of similar lists containing the illustrious alumni of other Youth Theatres across the world that the NYT inspired.

Birth of the NYT

When you summarily dismiss the Alleyns productions mentioned in the Michael Croft meme, you throw the baby out with the bathwater: all Henry V did was take a tested concept out into the big hard world. The real birth of the NYT was in his Julius Caesar, opening the theatre to non-thespians, and the stiffening of the early NYT by Alleyns pupils continued throughout my days at the school (1966-74), when it still provided something like 50% of the members. Does the reference in the Croft meme to "the existing dramatic society" refer to The Bear Pit? If so, this group claimed in my day unbroken descent from the school's original foundation for "12 poor boys of the parish of Camberwell", who were in all likelihood the child performers of the King's Men who took the female roles. I'm making this point of the Croft meme Talk as well. Another aspect worth examining is whether Alleyns may have provided some kind of financial support as well: I understood that Michael had been "seconded" and saw some evidence, although I have no hard copy, that financial support went with that.

I'm afraid that the Bear Pit's claim of an "unbroken descent" from the boy players of the Southwark-based companies – while attractive in theory – doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. Most of the boy players were in fact apprenticed to one or other of the actor/sharers, some of whom were freemen of such guilds as the grocers or goldsmiths. Furthermore, if one had existed, any such line would have gone through the upper school of Alleyn's foundation rather than the lower, and under the reorganization this became Dulwich College, with the lower school becoming Alleyn's. And Dulwich still has the Alleyn and Henslowe papers to prove it!

As far as I know, the only funding for Henry V came from Michael Croft's own pocket – mainly the proceeds from his book Spare the Rod – and from sponsorship by the Daily Telegraph. The school may have helped in some ways, but not financially. Peter Farey (talk) 14:24, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
