First names of candidates

For the vast majority of the candidates, the original entry was in the form of initial followed by surname. In the case of women, the title Miss, Mrs or Ms was included. This accurately refelected the sources. The addition of first names for a large number of candidates, while very likely accurate (except where abbreviated names have been used) is totally unsourced and certainly not verifiable from the sources given. Should first names be removed? Is there an issue here?

Greater London Council elections?

It's quite simple. The intro makes clear that the page is a record of results in national elections. The GLC was not national. Besides, local council elections (even for the GLC) are trivial. It is noticeable that most of the table is blank (OK, perhaps work in progress and more to come) and that the results are unreferenced. Emeraude (talk) 18:03, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

So? The GLC was a parliament for London and it had constituencies not wards and they were size of constituencies. So please bring it back. Untrue. The Greater London Council was not a Parliament for London, it was a council (the clue is in the third word of the name) and it had broadly similar powers to other county councils: as such, it was no more important than Surrey County Council, Kent County Council or Cornwall County Council. It doesn't matter at all what the electoral districts were called - the elected representatives were called councillors. Wikipedia generally regards local politicians as non-notable, but we are not even dealing with elected councillors here, just failed candidates. I repeat, the intro makes clear that the page is a record of results in national elections so any tabulation of county council (or GLC, same thing) candidates is irrelevant to this page. Otherwise, it faces infinite expansion (i.e., if GLC, then Surrey, Kent, Cornwall CCs etc etc etc) which would be nonsense. If you think that the listing of NF candidates in GLC elections is appropriate for an encyclopaedia, there's nothing to stop you starting such a page, but this isn't it. Simplest way is to copy something similar and adapt it (say, a section of this page). However, it might be worth your while seeing if such a page is likely to be accepted. It would be a pity to do the work and then find it proposed for deletion. Emeraude (talk) 16:38, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Candidates' first names

Since this page was created, various editors have added individual candidates' first names, generally without citing a reference. In most cases, the information for a particular election is referenced to a results table published by a national newspaper or similar source which does not give the first name but just an initial. This can be taken as accurate and backed by a reliable source. Altering this to show a first name is not backed up in this way. This is not to question the good faith of editors who have made these changes nor, indeed, their accuracy, but there is obviously considerable scope for error and even mischief! I am therefore going to revert all such instances to initials only unless the sources say otherwise. It does, though, seem reasonable to include first names for those candidates who also have Wikipedia articles, since their candidature ought to be referenced on those pages. The alternative is to reference every single individual instance of a first name but, if the sources are happy with just initials I don't see the point. Apart from anything else, we will end up with references taking up more space than the article itself. Emeraude (talk) 08:38, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
