Naming of the freeway
editMaybe due to a incorrect understanding between the words "Highway" and "Freeway" during the early years, Freeways in Taiwan got a strange (but official) English translation called "National Highway" by the authorities. Hence, if we follow the naming of the government, this freeway should be called "National Highway No.3"(國道三號) instead of "Freeway No.3"(三號高速公路) (i.e. National Highway Network Map). However, National Highway No.3 also got an official alias called "Formosa Freeway"(福爾摩沙高速公路), although its early alias "Second Freeway"(第二高速公路) is more popular still.--SElefant 03:05, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'm not sure what is the best way to translate these names into English. It is better to follow the official names used by the Bureau of Freeway. (Its own name is confusing...) However, the Directorate General of Highways uses the term National Freeway No. 3.
Anyway, I made change in the Template. Hopefuly, it may reduce confusion. --Chingi 04:07, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for the effort. I agree that, even the bureau itself got a conflict name compare to the term they use when mentioning those ????ways. So, maybe they treat the term "National Highway" equal to the term "Freeway", but I'm not 100% sure, either. In my opinion, I think local government didn't pay enough attention on internationalization of the transportation systems here. My boss is a British guy who stayed in Taiwan for 20 more years, but he still continues complaining that he can't figure out the exact meaning on those road signs, milage infos, since there are too many kinds of translation of a same place. For example, the bureau called 汐止交流道 as "Sijhih SIC" on their road map, but if you pass by Neihu SIC recently, you will see a sign "Northbound to XiZhi" by the entrance of the freeway. Can anyone imagine that "Sijhih" and "Xizhi" are different translations of a same place without understanding Chinese Characters first??? Due to these kinds of stupid things, no wonder we have to struggle here while trying to find a correct name of a specific road.--SElefant 08:50, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
