Acronym?

edit

Just curious — anyone know how they managed to get the acronym NFHS from "National Federation of State High School Associations"? Seems like a couple critical letters are missing.... BRossow T/C 16:34, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

High school equivalent of the NCAA? No.

edit

I am going to remove or alter this reference. While there are some similarities between the NFHS and NCAA, the analogy is not correct. The membership of the NCAA is made up of schools (universities). The membership of the NFHS is made up of 51 state associations -- not schools. The state associations are the true equivalents of the NCAA, because the state association have schools as members.

The NCAA writes rules that govern college competition, governs eligibility, and conducts tournaments. The NFHS does not govern eligibility or run tournaments. It writes rules for high school competition because its members, the state associations, have authorized it to do so. However, these rules are not binding on the states, and state associations can make their own rules if they desire.

The bottom line is that unlike the NCAA, the NFHS has no ability or authority to enforce its rules within the schools that fall under its umbrella. Instead, it is a service organization for the state associations. BlongerBros 04:15, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The organization is missing a key word in its name "Athletic." No big deal for Wikipedia. BUT, it is now on a template which was puzzling to me and probably to other people as well. Shouldn't we stick an "Athletic" prefix someplace? Particularly in the template. Student7 (talk) 14:12, 8 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Speculation on my part, but perhaps this is due to the fact that some state associations govern thing other than athletics. Texas' UIL, for example, governs things like band and academic competitions which are not athletic in nature. Wschart (talk) 19:46, 25 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
