More details? edit

How is the Council selected? Is it appointed by central government or elected in provincial elections? What powers does it have? Is there a clear separation of responsibilities between provincial and national government? If anyone knows, please add all of this. I'm taking a class on federalism at the moment, and don't even know if my home country is! Joziboy 24 March 2006, 17:11 (UTC)

Title of members edit

I've seen reference to "Members of Provincial Parliament" on the web. Is this correct? Rich Farmbrough 22:13 30 March 2006 (UTC).

(Bit of a late reply:) No, MPP's (or MPL's) are representatives in the parliament/legislature of a specific province (somewhat, I suppose, like MSP's in Scotland). Members of the NCOP, I would imagine, are just referred to as "Members of Parliament" since Parliament is made up of both the National Assembly (which is what people usually think of) and the NCOP. I don't know what the formal title/suffix would be, though. - htonl 19:20, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The image Image:Senate Chamber.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. The seating diagrm edit

The numbers in the seating diagram show only ANC and DA members, yet the table shows that there are members from the Ecnomic Freedom Fighters, Inkhata Freedom Party, National Freedom Party and the United Democratic Movement. It just seems a glaring contradiction!95.148.32.124 (talk) 17:45, 6 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

You're absolutely right; that seating diagram was incorrect. I have replaced it with a correct one. - htonl (talk) 21:44, 6 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Composition edit

I've worked out the new composition of the NCOP, according to Part B of Schedule 3 of the Constitution read with the Determination of Delegates (National Council of Provinces) Act, 1998, and it is as follows:

Party Delegate type Province Total
EC FS G KZN L M NW NC WC
African National Congress Permanent 4 3 3 3 4 4 3 3 2 29 54
Special 3 3 2 3 4 3 3 3 1 25
Democratic Alliance Permanent 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 2 3 13 20
Special 1 1 1 1 3 7
Economic Freedom Fighters Permanent 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 9 11
Special 1 1 2
Freedom Front Plus Permanent 1 1 2 3
Special 1 1
Inkatha Freedom Party Permanent 1 1 2
Special 1 1
Total 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 10 90

This accords with the party distribution in the official list of permanent delegates but there's no official source I can cite for the special delegate calculations, other than the algorithm set out in the Act. - htonl (talk) 20:32, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
