I've linked to this article from the Puja one, and hopefully people can continue linking here and expanding the article. The coconut seems to play a very important part in many Hindu rituals--I've often seen it offered to important people (holy people or other leaders) when they arrive to make speeches and such. What's the story behind decorating the coconut? I've seen gorgeous metal "shells" made for these cocomuts, and some amazing decorations. I understand those are done to emphasise the auspiciousness, but if anyone has more information on how and why particular symbols are used, it'd enrich the article greatly. I believe the coconut is also quite important in the Hindu fire ceremony known as a Havan. At the end of one hundred and eight recitations of the Gayatri Mantra, A coconut is placed on the fire and when it explodes, ignorence is said to have been dissolved. I'm not sure where I read this though, so I urge editors to check it before posting. --AaronCarson (talk) 20:34, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
