50% Naphthalene???

edit

...it contains about 50 percent naphthalene,...
Is that a credible claim? It would be nice to have a citation. Naphthalene is a solid, so any oil consisting of 50% Naphthalene would hardly be liquid, besides it is harmful and has a very unpleasant smell. That hardly sounds like something you would want to bath in... --Malbi 19:58, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

It already does have a citation to an article in The New York Times (the superscript "3" footnote at the end of the sentence). In that article, the original sentence I took it from is "Naftalan crude contains about 50 percent naphthalene, a hydrocarbon best known as the stuff of mothballs." --so as you noted, that would not smell very pleasant... but then again, neither does crude oil :-p Now weather the reporter got it correct, I don't know. I hope that helps. --Bobak 20:31, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Just to add: frankly, the whole idea of bathing in oil is very incredible to me (but those pictures in the references don't lie...) --that was the very reason I decided to build up this article around this unique petroleum spa industry. --Bobak 20:33, 7 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Move?

edit

separate article for the oil?

edit

I think the oil is separately notable from the town[1], and should have its own article. Also, the article Naphthalene does not mention "Naftalan". John Vandenberg (chat) 10:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I did an English-language Google Books search and most referred to the oil/ointment, not the location. The assumption of primary topic, asserted 5 years ago by a handful of users, but not actually demonstrated, seems to be void. I changed the ambiguous term into a tagged redirect and adjusted the hatnote, preparing for a move of the oil content to its own article. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 10:10, 5 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
